David Beckham has faced backlash for accepting the controversial role as Qatar’s tourism ambassador during the FIFA World Cup.

The former English footballer was criticized online by a number of social media users as well as celebrities, who called him out for hurting people’s feelings.

The backlash began after news about the former Manchester United star began making the rounds as he received £10m to promote the Middle Eastern country as a welcome tourist destination amid the row over human rights abuse.

Beckham, 48, has been criticized for supporting Qatar despite its strict laws on homosexuality. He has yet to deal with the backlash but celebrities are decrying the ambassador’s well-paid deal.

Former pop idol star Will Young wrote a scathing open letter challenging Beckham to donate a portion of his reported earnings each year to LGBTQIA+ charities.

“What is undoubtedly clear is that a superstar like you @davidbeckham to whom I once sang (not for any money I hasten to add) on your birthday has disappointed me more than I can say,” said the singer.

He added: “The decision to take £150m over 15 years is greedy enough and to bury your head in the sand from you, your team and your advisors is abhorrent and cowardly.”

Comedian Joe Lysette also criticized Beckham. He said in a video clip, “This is my last message to David Beckham, I am the one who ripped a lot of money in the cost of living crisis.

Lycett added, “I’m not even weird! I asked Attitude if I could tear it up, and they were more than happy to oblige.”

Come Dancing star John Whaite voiced his thoughts at the TV Choice Awards this month, saying it was a “disgusting” move and that David was “underestimating himself.”

“I think he has the potential to make a huge difference in this world,” he added. “Millions if not billions have eyes on him, and he’s just making the wrong move right now.”

The Bake Off winner continued, “As someone with so much power and money, he has the opportunity to really change lives, and he does the exact opposite. So shame on him.”
