Mumbai hosts Kincri FC and Churchill Brothers played to a 1-1 draw in a highly competitive I-League match of the 2022-23 season at Cooperage Football Ground on Thursday.

An early first-half goal by Azvar Noorani was canceled out late in the second half by Lalkawpuimawia as Churchill Brothers finally opened their account in the points table in the third round. Mumbai Kinkiree now has four points from its three matches.

The game started quickly when Kinkari shot the lead in the sixth minute when Ranjit Pandhry crossed the ball to Azvar Noorani who drifted into Churchill’s box from the left and finished off a flawless shot from an angle. Two minutes later, home captain Kiran Bandhir nearly doubled the lead when his header went wide after a corner kick had been taken by Aravindraj Rajan.

As the match progressed, Churchill Brothers began to breach the opponents’ box but the hosts also worked hard to thwart the Goan attackers. In the 27th minute, Noorani received the ball in his own half and passed it to Pandry to catch Churchill’s defense by surprise. However, Churchill’s goalkeeper Albino Gomez went out of line to deal with the attack efficiently.

Pandhare dominated midfield for Kenkre, while Noorani remained a constant threat on the left with his skill and pace as the hosts made a good impact with their counter-attacks. Churchill Brothers dominated the game in terms of possession but failed to test Kinker goalkeeper Padham Chhetri too many times.

The second half started with Churchill conceding a free kick near the Kinkiri penalty area in the 48th minute. Momo Cisse fired a powerful shot into the top corner but Chhetri made a superb save to deny him what could have been a great goal.

Ten minutes after half-time, Churchill’s Lamgoulin Hangsheng collected the ball from the right and crossed it to Richard Costa, whose effort was saved by Chhetri. On the other hand, in the 61st minute, Cisse misjudged Kinsilang Khongsit’s cross that reached Pandry. Fortunately for Churchill, however, Bandry’s shot went over the crossbar.

With seven minutes of regulation time remaining, the Red Machines tied the game. Tana kicked a free kick for Sisi in the penalty area. Churchill’s captain flicked the ball to Joseph Clemente, who then sent it to Lalkawpuimawia to score the equaliser.

After that, both teams did their best to get full points. In the end, Churchill got the closest as Tana fired in a cross into the penalty area from a corner kick in the last minute of extra time. Sissy rose to the highest level but his shot was directly at goalkeeper Chettri, who caught the ball as the referee blew the final whistle.
