After Elon Musk announced that Twitter would change its verification process, there was outrage on social media and around the internet, with many users, including Zack Whittaker of TechCrunch, reporting phishing emails intended to steal personal information.
According to TechCrunch, malicious emails that aim to steal passwords are sent to unsuspecting individuals, especially those with verified accounts. The emails appear to be from Twitter Support, and are linked to an attacking website also masquerading as a Twitter support page.
“Don’t lose your verification status.” Said the email received by the newsroom TechCrunch, with “Twitter Warning” as the subject. Whitaker noted that the emails were sent from a Gmail email address, and lead to a Google Doc, followed by a Google site.

It appears that the attackers are taking advantage of the uncertainty that is in the air regarding the new Twitter Blue verification process.
Multiple verified accounts are reporting security threats
Twitter account @MelissaJPeltier said, “I fell into a phishing scam in my DM a week before Elon took over. Then they used the hijacked blue check to lure other blue checks into the scam. Don’t think the timing is just a coincidence.”

A Twitter user using the username Viss, also reported the same thing. “I was added to a list by some accounts claiming to be some sort of validator enforcement. They tried to convince me to go to some website and fill out a form to maintain verification status,” he claimed.
Fortunately, it appears that Google has removed the web pages that were used for phishing. “Confirmation that the relevant links and accounts have been removed due to violations of our program policies,” a Google spokesperson said.
This problem is the result of ambiguous new verification criteria
Although the project may still be on hold because Elon Musk hasn’t made a final decision yet, Platformer anticipates that verification will likely be included in Twitter Blue. “The entire verification process is currently being renewed,” Musk said in his tweet.
It would be in everyone’s interest if Twitter could clear the current situation to mitigate the paranoia and rejection.
