Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka nearly strangled the woman during an alleged rape attempt, according to media reports citing police documents.

The woman alleged that she was sexually assaulted four times at her home in Rose Bay, Sydney on November 2 after going out on a date with the international cricketer, who was here as part of the Sri Lankan team in the ongoing T20. Globalism Glass.

Sydney police have arrested Jonathilaka, 31, from his team’s hotel, even as other members of the Sri Lankan team returned home after the team’s Super 12 stage exit.

The left-handed hitter was denied bail on Monday and faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that Jonathilaka had attempted to strangle her three times during the sexual assault.

Australian media reports, citing police documents, said: “The complainant tried to remove the accused’s hand by holding his wrist, but the accused pressed hard around her neck.”

The complainant feared for her life and could not escape from the accused.

“She constantly tried to get away from the accused, which is a clear indication that she did not agree.”

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for January 12.

Sri Lanka cricket (SLC) took a strong note of the incident and suspended Jonathilaka from all forms of the game.

The Sri Lankan government, disgraced by the incident, requested the SLC to conduct an immediate investigation into the matter.

Gunathilaka played against Namibia in a first-round match for Sri Lanka and was out of the duck.

He was later excluded from the tournament due to injury but remained with the team after qualifying for the Super 12 stage.

Jonathilaka, who has represented Sri Lanka in eight Tests, 47 ODIs and 46 T20 Internationals, is no stranger to controversies.

In 2021, he was suspended by SLC for one year after he broke through the team’s biosecurity bubble on the Tour of England with teammates Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella.

SLC also gave him a six-month ban in 2018 after he violated the team’s curfew. That same year, Gunathilaka was also arrested after his unnamed friend was accused of raping a Norwegian woman.

In 2017, he was suspended by the board for six limited matches after learning that Gunathilaka had missed training sessions and attended a match without his cricket equipment.
