Former New Zealand footballer Mitchell McClingan has predicted “dark days” for his team over the next five to 10 years, saying there is a dearth of winners in the team led by Ken Williamson.

New Zealand were riding the wave of impressive all-round performances against Australia in their opening match Super 12 of the T20 ICC World Cup and became the first team to enter the semi-finals, but a sub-par performance against Pakistan in the knockout stage saw them exit the global event.

During the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in the UAE, the Black Caps lost to Australia after reaching the final. Two defeats in back-to-back T20 Finals at the end of the business for the tournament forced McClingan to question whether the team was too nice while dealing with opponents.

The 36-year-old McClingan, who played 48 ODIs and 29 T20Is taking 82 and 30 wickets respectively, told SENZ Breakfast that, “I hope I’m wrong, but it might be a dark 5-10 years of New Zealand cricket. I just feel That we lack winners… We are very kind.”

McClingan noted that he was stunned by the fact that on the one hand they crushed Australia with 89 throws, on the other hand they could only score 152 against Pakistan in the semi-finals, which were easily chased for a three-wicket loss.

The former player also said that this version of the T20 World Cup has the worst level among the teams.

“I think this is the worst standard in terms of form entirely by all the teams around the world,” McClingan said. “I actually felt like this was the tournament we should have won, and we should have won easily.

“I honestly think we were the favorites after that first game against Australia; we should have been the favorites to win this tournament (after) the way other teams around the world were playing soundly.

“England just hit their belts (in) that last game – Mark Wood’s exit is a huge loss for them – but they’re the only team that’s really starting to look like maybe… they’re hitting their belts.

“It was (a tournament) wide open, and I personally think we should have won,” he added.

New Zealand is now aiming for glory at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India after their agonizing final loss to England in 2019.
