Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter ended a little over a week ago, but as previously speculated, the “chief twit” will begin laying off Twitter employees starting this weekend. Twitter’s workforce currently consists of 7,500 employees.

Twitter employees were notified in an email seen by The New York Times that layoffs would begin Friday and were instructed not to come to work that day. The total number of layoffs the company was considering was not mentioned in the email.

The email reads, “In an effort to put Twitter on a healthy track, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce.” It has also been reported that Musk is rescinding the work-anywhere policy that Twitter offers to its employees. It is currently unknown if Twitter employees in India are also part of Musk’s layoff plan.

Recently, a photo surfaced online showing a Twitter employee napping on the office floor at Twitter HQ and said that Musk is pressuring employees to put in extra hours to meet strict deadlines and put in 80 hours a week.

Elon Musk is said to be working with close colleagues at Tesla and SpaceX to structure layoff plans and force the implementation of new features including changes to Twitter Blue, thus verifying by offering a blue flag for $8 to Twitter users and the inclusion of a paywall video ban that could help creators content in monetizing their own content.

Twitter is also facing pressure from advertisers as they demand to know how Musk plans to maintain commitments. “Unless Elon hires new leaders who are committed to keeping this ‘free’ platform safe from hate speech, it is not a platform that brands can/should advertise on,” said Ali Wassum, global director of social media and integrated media for Jordan Footwear (Nike).

Musk has been very vocal about his stance on Twitter’s new verification standards. “To all the complainants, please keep complaining, but it will cost $8,” Elon said. He later added, “Twitter speaks to the inner masochist in all of us.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Musk shared on Twitter as well, with the AOC criticizing Musk. “Lmao’s Billionaire is seriously trying to sell people on the idea that ‘Freedom of Speech’ is actually an $8 per month subscription plan,” the AOC said in a tweet. Musk replied, “We appreciate your feedback, now pay the $8.”
