Sydney: Arrested for sexual assault of a woman during T20 Globalism Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Junathilaka was refused bail after a hearing in a district court here on Monday.
He attended the hearing via video link at Downing Center Local Court from Surrey Hills Cells.
Jonathilaka, 31, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman on November 2.

According to a report in the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’, Jonathilaka was handcuffed and wearing a gray T-shirt, blue jeans and skinny leggings during his virtual appearance for the session.
His attorney, Ananda Amaranath, applied for bail during the “closed court” hearing and Judge Robert Williams refused to release him on bail, according to the report.
“Certainly, we are considering an application to the Supreme Court and it will be done as soon as possible,” Amaranth was quoted as saying in the report.
“Obviously he will be disappointed.” The Sri Lankan team left Australia without Jonathilaka after being eliminated from the T20 World Cup on Saturday.
Amaranath said he understood that “some team officials remained in the country.” He also said that Jonathilaka has no family in Australia.
He played left batting against Namibia in the first round match of the ongoing tournament and was out of the duck. Later, he was disqualified from the tournament due to injury even as the team qualified for the Super 12 stage. The Lankan team finished fourth in Group 1.
According to local media reports, Jonathilaka and the woman have been in contact for several days after calling via an online dating app. The arrest was made from a hotel in Sydney a few hours before the Sri Lankan team left for Australia.
The Sri Lankan government has asked Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to conduct an immediate investigation. SLC has made it clear that it will take strict action against the player if found guilty.
Jonathilaka is no stranger to controversies.
In 2021, he was suspended by SLC for one year after he broke through the team’s biosecurity bubble on the Tour of England with teammates Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella.
The board also gave him a six-month ban in 2018 after he violated the team’s curfew. That same year, Gunathilaka was also arrested after his unnamed friend was accused of raping a Norwegian woman.
In 2017, he was suspended by the board for six limited matches after it was discovered that Gunathilaka had missed training sessions and attended a match without his cricket equipment.
He has represented Sri Lanka in eight Tests, 47 ODIs and 46 T20 Internationals.
