The World Cup finals kick off later on Sunday when host country Qatar meets Ecuador in the opening match.

“I have bought the flags of all the major football-playing nations to display in and around my home. I am doing the same before the huge tournament started two decades ago,” said Dholal Sarkar, a Conagar resident.

Sheikh said an average of 500 shirts have been sold per day since the past four days. The jersey set, consisting of a T-shirt and shorts, is priced in the range of 600-800 rupees in the market, while the standard flag is priced at 150 rupees.

Sheikh said the jerseys are also available for children, as young as two years old, starting at 300 rupees per set.

“We are big fans of Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), and the whole family wears the country’s shirt while watching football matches featuring Ronaldo. For this World Cup, I bought a shirt for my 4-year-old son too,” said Sohail Khan, IT professional and resident in running.

Football fans said that the marketplace is a favorite destination for jerseys, flags, and other accessories because of the affordable prices, which are much lower than the price on e-commerce platforms.

“I bought a set of shirts from Lionel Messi (Argentina) for 600 rupees in Medan Market. It costs more than 1,100 rupees on many e-commerce sites,” said Ankur Hazra, who plays football at club level.

Shop owners said that there is a huge demand for printing names and numbers on T-shirts.

Shoaib, who has owned a shop in the market for 12 years, said an alphabet or a number could be printed on a T-shirt for 10 rupees each.
