NEW YORK: It wouldn’t be a Grammy Award without a healthy dose of surprises, nicks and scrapes, and the list of nominees for the February 2023 ceremony did not disappoint.
Here’s a list of the hot posts about the nominations: open questions, amusing oddities — and questionable selections.
Will Beyoncé finally win? –
Beyoncé is no stranger to the Grammys: The 41-year-old is the Recording Academy’s winningest woman, and she’s tied with her husband, rap mogul Jay-Z, for the most nominations with 88.
But even as she rules the Grammy record books, Queen Bey is also among the show’s most scorned performers.
During her career, she has triumphed only once in the highest categories: in 2010, she won Song of the Year for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”.
The pop god had not one but two chances in 2021 to capture record of the year, but it went instead to Billie Eilish, who had swept the top four categories the previous year.
It was hard not to see what it was like to slay 2017 against Bay, who famously lost Album of the Year to Adele.
Either way, Adele and Eilish said their awards should have gone to Beyoncé.
The 2023 ceremony will see Adele and Beyoncé square off once again — and the Beyhive are eagerly waiting to see if this year is finally theirs.
– Is Viola Davis the next EGOT? –
It’s one of those Hollywood things that has entered the pop culture lexicon: EGOT. It signifies the rare club of performers—fewer than 20 of them—who have won Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tony Awards. And Viola Davis could be next.
The 57-year-old actress has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Audiobook, Narrative & Storyboard category for her latest memoir, ‘Finding Me’.
Its competitors are somewhat formidable. Comedian Mel Brooks already has an EGOT. Lin-Manual Miranda is away from an Oscar. Jamie Foxx and Questlove are both Oscar and Grammy winners.
Davis won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for “Fences” opposite Denzel Washington, and her second Tony for the same role a few years ago. She won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama for “How to Get Away with Murder” in 2015.

The past few years have seen heated debate over how to separate art from artist – or whether it should be done – and concerns about artists accused of off-stage harmful behavior being “cancelled”.
But a year after comedian Louis CK — who admitted to sexual misconduct — won a Grammy, he’s nominated again in the Best Comedy Album category.
His competition includes Dave Chappelle, who has been criticized for doubling down on his groups that some have deemed transphobic.
Chris Brown — who pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend, superstar Rihanna, and was later charged with rape in a separate case — earned a Best R&B Album nod for the deluxe version of his work “Breezy.”
A WE nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category was won by Canadian band Arcade Fire, with lead singer Win Butler facing multiple accusations of sexual misconduct.
However, polarizing country singer Morgan Wallen — who came under fire after a video of him using racial slurs emerged — was left out of the Grammy nominations.

Many Grammy perennials are back—but a handful of potential contenders have been silenced or sidelined altogether.
Bad Bunny earned a long-deserved nod for Album of the Year, but was inexplicably left out of Song and Record of the Year—his iconic smash “Titi Me Pregunto” had been blasting off US car stereos for months—as throwback artists including Swept ABBA and Bonnie Raitt are in the top category.
Rosalía was relegated to the Latin rock and alternative categories as her rocking album “Motomami” was left out of the more high-profile areas, while the absence of rap queens Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion was stark.
Some Grammy darlings, however, have gone on to produce acts that critics consider to have passed their fame, with Coldplay and Brandi Carlisle earning as many nominations as they do year after year.
