Another World Cup, same story. The Indian cricket team raised hopes only to see their campaign unravel with a grumble against England in the semi-finals. A team full of match winners, quality singles players, and experienced T20 operatives, but the World Cup is still a long way off. On Thursday, whatever could go wrong, Rohit Sharma and his teammates miscalculated as they succumbed to a massive defeat in Adelaide following their disappointing exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup.

However, another failed campaign at the ICC event will force the team management to perform an autopsy as they have in the past, but this time, they will have to make some brave/ruthless decisions to set the course for the future.

Wanted: New opening pair

Alex Hales and Joss Butler, the English opener, put together a master class on how to play openers. The management of the Indian team has to move on from Rohit and Rahul for good. We still have two years until the next World Cup – plenty of time to prepare the youth for this role.
Kohli is still the fulcrum
There were puffs when Virat Kohli He was struggling over whether he deserved a place in the T20I 11 in India. With four half-century in six innings, he has shut down those discussions for good. Critics may still point to his scoring rate but given the situation he often found himself – walking inside Powerplay, trying to lead a recovery and ensuring the hit didn’t collapse. He’s more demanding in his squad than ever before adding a guarantee and giving others that they can play freely without worrying about the wicket dropping at the end.
Give Pandya The Captaincy
He’s bowling with all his might. His hit was not in question. He has proven his captaincy qualifications by winning the IPL title with distinction for the first time. What should Hardik Pandya do to get the top job? India has moved from Kohli to Rohit in the hope of securing the ICC title after years of waiting. Rohit will likely not be around (at least in the T20Is) when the next T20 World Cup is played given that the current captain will be in his late 30s. Pandya will only get better. Give him time to grow in the role and earn the trust of the players. Let him build his own team.
Wanted: Dependable Gazelle
Ravichandran Ashwin did a great job in the World Cup but it seems that the management of the Indian team wants to move on from the number one bowler. Otherwise why not include him in any of the white ball teams for the next round in New Zealand and Bangladesh? Yozvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Chahal are reunited. Hopefully the duo gets an extended run before they split again. Oddly enough, young Ravi Bishnoi did not find a place in any of the white ball teams either.
The indispensable Jadeja & Bumrah
It was a pity that two of their biggest names were injured near the World Cup. Allrounder Ravindra Jadeja and ace Jasprit Bumrah were both injured and disqualified from the entire tournament. While it is almost impossible to find a Bumrah replacement, it was thought that Axar Patel might fill Jadeja somewhat. While Mohamed El-Shamy, who was promoted to the main line-up from the mobile reserve to fill the huge void left by Boumera’s absence, performed well, Aksar fought a forgotten championship. He managed 9 runs out of 3 innings and only threw 13.2 overs in five matches with 3 wickets in them.
With that in mind and another World Cup next year, BCCI will have to manage the workload at Bumrah and Jadeja more carefully as they regularly appear in all three formats. Not forgetting that it is indispensable for its own IPL privileges as well.
