As chip master Qualcomm aims to go beyond serving the global smartphone industry to meet the needs of the larger hardware ecosystem, the 17,000-plus company India The workforce is helping it realize its dream of becoming a connected chip powerhouse, according to senior executives.
With hubs in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Noida, India’s R&D operations are the company’s largest outside of its US headquarters.
India is a good place for them to transition from a wireless carrier for the mobile industry to a connected processor company for the smart edge, Ziad Asghar, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, told IANS.
“R&D teams in India are busy working towards our goal of entering new device areas and driving them beyond smartphones. We have some of the brightest people working on new technologies, particularly in our Bengaluru and Hyderabad hubs, which gives tangible shape to our vision.”
Qualcomm has major hardware and software engineering teams in India, including 5G and augmented and virtual reality.
The company has made a big bet on the extended reality (XR) market, showcasing new technologies at the ‘Snapdragon Summit 2022’ to power future smart glasses, AR/VR headsets, laptops, tablets, wearables, hearing aids and more.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile platform has been developed with the help of various R&D teams in India, and the XR is at the beginning of its growth curve.
According to Dr. Vinesh Sukumar, Senior Director – Head of AI/ML Product Management at Qualcomm, India has always been a growing market for Qualcomm.
“We have always been very bullish on the Indian market and the talent abundance in the country. Qualcomm is putting a lot of investment and research into its India hubs, in AI and machine learning, to improve user experiences across games, XR, cars, and more,” Sukumar said.
Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon recently stated that the company continues to be the leading platform provider for nearly all commercially available and announced XR devices and remains well positioned as XR evolves.
Prabhu Ram, President, Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR, told IANS that by leveraging powerful in-house AI across the board, Qualcomm has enabled intelligent experiences with Snapdragon for the digitally accelerated world, across industries, beyond mobile.
“At the core of Qualcomm’s transformation into a powerful intelligent edge platform company is in-house R&D talent – including, for example, in Bengaluru and Hyderabad,” Ram noted.
