New Zealand decided to field first after winning the toss, and while Kane Williamson’s bowlers prevented the Indians from going down to the flyer, captains Dhawan and Gill opened after being watchful.

Having hit 40 in his first 10 overs after Gill was dropped by Lucky Ferguson off Matt Henry’s bowling, the Indian openers looked to improve their run rate and looked for boundaries.

Their endeavor paid off as India passed 100 in 21 overs with both Dhawan and Gill clearing the ropes on a regular basis.

Dhawan clipped Henry behind a deep point and clipped him out of the pads in the 15th minute to get a straight forty.

Then the India captain got two more bounds, off Adam Milne, including a clever uppercut to bring up India’s hundreds.

Having already hit two sixes on a long man and third, where he used an excellent downhill shot, Gill got his third maximum when his left arm spinner smashed Mitchell Santner down to the ground and into the screen.
