New Delhi: Shikhar Dhan, popularly known as ‘Gabar’ in the Indian cricket team, is a left-handed attacking batsman, while also having a knack for right-handed bowling. This player has put many matches in India’s swing by batting the best on his bill, where India was in crisis. He is considered one of the best salami batsmen in the world due to his powerful and aggressive batting.

Shikhardhawan was born on 5 December 1985 in a Punjabi Hindu family. He completed his schooling from St. Mark’s Senior Secondary Public School, Pachham Vihar, Delhi. He became fond of cricket in his youth. One day, watching his cousin play for Sonnet Club, he developed a passion for cricket. After which his parents enrolled Dhawan in Sonnet Club at the age of 12. Coach Tarak Sinha started training him in cricket. In the early days he played as a wicket keeper in the club but later he focused more on batting.

He was often overlooked by the selectors while playing domestic cricket. Due to this lack of attention, he became very disappointed and once he even gave up his intention to play cricket. But after some time he made everyone happy by improving his game.

Since then he worked hard to become a good cricketer. Then he showed the best of his game and scored a century for the club in the Under-15 tournament. Then Dhawan’s game continued to improve, which attracted the attention of the selectors. He got the opportunity to play for Delhi for the first time in the year 1999 in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. He was the highest run-scorer in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. Delhi was the runner-up in this series. Dhawan showcased his brilliant batting style and scored 755 runs in 9 innings at an average of 83.88 with two centuries. His impressive performances for Delhi earned him selection in the India Under-17 squad for the Under-17 Asia Cup in 2000. Dhawan was then also selected for the 2004 U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh where he emerged as the leading run-scorer. He scored 505 runs in 7 innings. This is still the record for a single tournament. Shikhardhawan is an Indian cricketer who plays for India in international cricket and for Delhi in domestic cricket.

Shikhar Dhawan made his ODI debut against Australia in Visakhapatnam in October 2010. He made his Test debut against the same team in Mohali in March 2013, where he scored the fastest century by any batsman on Test debut and ended his innings with 187 off 174 balls. Apart from his stylish batting, he also became known for his stylish mustache and hairstyle. His friends affectionately call him “Gabar”. Apart from international cricket matches, Shekhar plays for Delhi Capitals in IPL.

He was made the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad before the start of the 2013 IPL.

Dhawan is also credited as the highest run-scorer in the U-19 World Cup. He scored 505 runs in 7 innings in the year 2004. He is the only player to reach the fastest 1000 runs in an ICC ODI tournament (16 innings). Dhawan also scored the fastest century on Test debut with 187 off 85 balls against Australia in 2013. Dhawan also scored 412 runs in 8 innings, the highest by an Indian player in the 2015 ICC World Cup.

He is the first cricketer to win 2 consecutive golden bats in the ICC Champions Trophy. Shikhar Dhan is the second fastest batsman after Virat Kohli to complete 4000 and 5000 runs in ODIs. Shikhardhawan has scored the most runs in a calendar year for India in T20 International cricket. Shikhar Dhawan is the first Indian batsman to score a century in his 100th ODI. Shikhar Dhawan is the first player in IPL history to score two consecutive centuries. He was awarded the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his exploits in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, becoming the third Indian player to win the award in an ICC tournament after Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh.
