It's time to make bold decisions

tHere are many question marks about the way Pakistani sports are run. The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has failed miserably to do anything noteworthy to develop sports in the country. Politics continues to destroy sports in the country.

PSB Chairman Colonel (retired) Asif Zaman was recently removed from office, and it was a political decision. Like other general managers, Zaman also lacked powers and had many obstacles in his path and was unable to make any major decisions. DG PSB shall be the de facto Chairman of the Board. He shouldn’t be a writer. He should have more powers which is the only way to make the right decisions at the right time.

Sports governance is not the prerogative of the IPC, its ministers and ministers. They are not experts in the sport and due to lack of proper knowledge, they are unable to do anything noteworthy. I have seen many ministers and secretaries who have failed to deliver.

With this thing in mind, DG PSB should be given the appropriate powers. He must have the qualities of a supreme official. It should be someone who knows the sport and its intricacies. But the question arises: should PSB remain there, or should some other institution take its place that could govern sports at the state level.

We spoke to Syed Aqil Shah, former sports minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the country’s most prominent sports figure and former senator. He will tell you what is wrong with the sport in the country and what kind of step we need to take in order to get things right.

“I think PSB should be abolished and a sports body should be formed in its place which is the only way to bring about an improvement in sports in the country. I have seen this in many countries,” Shah told ‘News on Sunday’ (TNS) in an interview.

Shah was on a personal visit to Karachi a few days ago. “The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) should have sufficient representation in the sports body. There should be one or two such representatives from the provinces who have served the sport and worked with the federations,” Shah said.

The Sports Secretaries of all Federal Units shall be its members and the body shall have a Federal Minister or, more appropriately, a Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Sport and the Prime Minister himself as its Patron.

Shah said the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Sports should run this authority as its head.

“If this happens, it will help improve coordination and strong decisions will be taken easily for the welfare of the athletes and the improvement of the sport in the country which has tremendous talent,” Shah said.

“There will also be a secretary for the authority and businessmen will be members of it, because sports cannot be run without sponsorship,” Shah said.

“I will also stress that the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister in Sports must be a man from sports and not from politics. Because he will be in direct contact with the Prime Minister so that things are managed intelligently.

Shah said the authority would need its own budget in order to practice sports at the central level.

“There should be at least three conferences at the national level so that experts can give their opinions before the authorities take a step to set up a sports body,” Shah said.

“I believe that sports should be kept away from bureaucracy and should be left to those who are good at running sports,” said Shah.

But the role of the labor agency must be recognized. The task of the Employment Agency is to communicate with other countries, and to form, send, and prepare accreditation cards. We have to follow the Olympic Charter. There are some federations that do not cooperate with the Program of Action. The rule is that the NOC will recognize federations affiliated to international federations. Shah said these federations should follow the Olympic Charter and the Constitution of the Program of Action.

The IOC suspended the Pakistan Athletics Federation (AFP) and the Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF) and set up management committees in their stead. Shah said that someone has been appointed as a member of the board of directors of PSB which has been suspended by the NOC.

Shah said a nursery should be developed. “In the past, I have asked the POA to develop foster homes. Look, federations have three votes while provinces have one. I think there should be at least equal votes from these bodies because both are equally important,” he said.

Shah’s suggestions deserve attention. A major change in the sports system is needed. In fact, PSB is useless after the transition of power. The big issue is that its budget is barely one billion rupees and most of it is spent on pensions and salaries of its employees.

There is a writer culture at PSB. It lacks qualified personnel. I failed miserably at that. There is a lot of politics. She has always been at odds with the North Oil Company and is the most destructive.

In the past I also provided a mathematical model, which was a viable system, but Aqil Shah, who is also the President of the Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) and the President of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Olympic Association, also made a strong suggestion that could be a refinement if it is discussed by experts before preparing the final draft. by the concerned authorities. Let’s take a bold step. It’s time for us to do that.
