Josh Hazlewood enjoyed the challenge of Captaincy’s debut

Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood’s experience in captaining the team for the first time was “extremely exciting” as well as “nerve-wracking” as he led the team to the ODI series against England in Sydney cricket Earth on Sunday.

The 31-year-old made his captaincy debut with regular ODI captain Pat Cummins not out in the XI and led Australia to a 72-run victory over the recently crowned T20 Globalism The England champions lead 2-0 in the series.

After taking 280/8 in the allotted 50th over, Australia dismissed England for just 208 in 38.5 overs to secure a huge win for Joss Butler’s side.

With precious little captaincy experience, Hazlewood admitted he was nervous ahead of the second ODI. Hazlewood became captain of Australia’s 28 men’s ODI team after being handed the reins with “managing Cummins’ workload ahead of five consecutive effective Tests starting on November 30”, according to cricket.com.au.

“While the fast bowler was promoted to deputy Test captain in 2018 and has been around a limited ‘leadership range’ for some time, prior to Saturday’s match at the SCG, Hazlewood had never captained a team in his 14-year professional career,” according to the report.

Hazlewood said after the match: “It was very exciting and a bit nerve-wracking. I definitely had fun and it was quite a challenge out there while the (James Vince and Sam Billings) partnership was going on. I got a couple of wickets and that’s what started the game.”

The veteran made the crucial decision to put himself back into attack to break a stands 122 run between Vince and Billings that briefly put England in the driver’s seat. Vince’s ejection proved to be the turning point in the match. Hazlewood trapped Vince lbw for 60, and finished with 2/33 from seven overs despite conceding 0/21 from his first two overs, which put him under pressure to lead the side.

Hazlewood said: “I was thinking about everyone else’s bowling rather than my own bowling at first. But (eventually) I got into a groove there. Then it all seemed to flow really well. We obviously had a Kez (Alex Carey) there, An experienced keeper to do all angles with the pitch and different things.The two players (Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa) have played a lot of cricket.They know their pitches, so I stayed out of their way as best I could.

He added, “There was never a time I had to step in or argue, so it was seamless.”
