Karachi catches World Cup fever

tThe wait is over. There are only a few hours left before the biggest football competition – the FIFA World Cup 2022 kicks off in Qatar. Today, the 22nd edition of the global football event will start in a flash. The hype has reached its peak among football fans all over the world.

Soccer fans are very excited about the arrival of the exciting 32-team global tournament, which kicks off on Sunday (today). Football fans in Karachi, especially Lyari and Malir districts, are keen to witness this mega global event.

In the populous town of Liari, also known as Mini Brasil, there are fans who love to watch football. They are very happy about the arrival of this global event. In some places in Lyari and Malir, glimpses of excitement can be seen as pictures of players and graffiti appear on the walls. Most of the fans also raised the flags of their favorite teams on the roofs of their homes.

Most of Leari and Maler’s fans support Brazil or Argentina, the two South American arch-rivals. But there are those who support Germany.

Raheem Baloch, who lives in Lyari, closely watches domestic and international football competitions. He says the World Cup is a festival for those who live in Lyari. During the World Cup, special screens will be arranged to watch football matches.

“Many Lyari sites were painted with pictures of famous footballers, and sketches were also drawn on various walls,” he says.

Student Ahsan Yarcan says: “The four-year wait is finally over and now we will watch the FIFA World Cup matches together in support of our favorite teams.

“The pictures and drawings of Neymar, Messi and Ronaldo are there to attract our football fans,” Ahsan said. “At every World Cup match, fans support their favorite team, and if their favorite team wins, they perform the traditional Lyari leva dance to celebrate their team’s success.”

Football enthusiast Nabil Razak says everyone is waiting to watch the exciting matches of the World Cup in Mini Brasil, the name some people have given to Liari.

Ahmed Khan is also among the fans. “Brazil will be the favorites in the FIFA World Cup, and Neymar will once again shine as a key player in the Brazilian team who will score goals.”

Malir Sadiq Goth, about 30 kilometers from Lyari, is another place where fans’ passion for the World Cup shines through, and fans have also completed their preparations to watch FIFA World Cup matches.

The ardent football fans living in Sadiq Guth have done special things to support their favorite teams; Some fans have placed the flags of their favorite teams on the roofs of their homes while some fans have painted flags and pictures of iconic players on the outside of their homes.

Sabina Hussain, resident of Siddique Goth in Malir, is very excited about the World Cup coming to Qatar. She decorated the walls of her street with the tireless efforts of her community members by painting portraits of iconic soccer players and the flags of the countries they supported in the World Cup.

Speaking to The News on Sunday, Sabina said, “It took almost two months to decorate the walls with pictures of football players and their flags. I did it with the help of the children and girls of the Baloch community and the ardent young football fans.”

“We have completed the special preparations to watch the FIFA World Cup matches and the excitement of the community is at its peak,” Sabina added.

“The girls of the Baloch community played a big role in decorating the walls,” she said.

Sabina says Malir’s football fans support Brazil and Argentina at the World Cup. But her favorite team in the World Cup is Germany.

Hafeez Baloch, who also lives in Guth’s friend, made a special arrangement to watch the matches on a local ground. He says, “We are very excited about this event. A projector will be installed in the grounds to watch the night matches of the World Cup live on a big screen.”
