After putting in huge cutouts of international football stars, Malabarians decided to pay tribute to one of them as they created a huge cutout for Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri in Thrissur.

Earlier, FIFA shared viral images of giant cutouts of Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi that were placed by enthusiastic supporters on the banks of a river in Kerala’s Kozhikode district. Although India will not be part of the FIFA World Cup, that hasn’t stopped fans from putting up 40-foot pieces of Chhetri in Thrissur.

Chetthri has been the mascot of Indian football for over a decade. The star striker is India’s all-time leading goalscorer. He also has the third highest number of goals among active players, behind only superstars Ronaldo and Messi. Chetthri is currently playing for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Premier League (ISL).

Meanwhile, India’s Chhetri team failed to reverse its success. The Indian Tigers find themselves at 106th in the FIFA rankings and are far from qualifying for the prestigious FIFA World Cup anytime soon. However, India has gradually made progress and has improved significantly since coach Igor Stimak took over. Stemak and his men will now head into the Asian Cup and will be looking to dominate the tournament scheduled for later this year.

The FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar on November 20. And although India will not be a part of the massive tournament, fans will be rooting for their favorite nations to lift the coveted trophy. South American nations Argentina and Brazil have large fan bases, while reigning champions Portugal Ronaldo and France also command their admiration in India. Six weeks will last in Qatar, and it will be interesting to see which team will take home the prestigious trophy this time.
