It wasn’t the easiest decision to make as I intend to keep playing for a few more years but after discussions with the Mumbai Indians I’ve got a franchise that has made a lot of needs to relocate and if I no longer play for MI then I can’t see myself playing against MI either. “Once upon a time MI was always on MI”
This is not an emotional farewell to MI but I have agreed to take up the role of batting coach in the IPL as well as play for MI Emirates. This next chapter in my career is really exciting and allows me to also transition myself from playing to coaching
I am extremely proud, honored and blessed to have represented the biggest and most successful team in the IPL over the past 13 seasons. It has always been an ambition to play for such a great team and although I will miss the IPL buzz you get as a player, I take comfort in having been fortunate enough to play with some of the best players in the world. In front of our excited audience. I have always felt and appreciated their unconditional support on and off the field. Together, we won the Champions League in 2011 and 2013 and the IPL in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
1 I must say a huge thank you to the coaches, managers and other backroom support staff at our Mumbai Indians whom I have now joined. We would not have achieved success over the years without their continued hard work, dedication and commitment to creating the best environment and I look forward to emulating their successful approach.
In particular, I would like to pay special tribute to my good friend Robin Singh for his sound advice and guidance over the years whose shoes I now fill.
In all sincerity, I express my deep appreciation to Mukesh, Nita and Akash Ambani for their immense love, support and respect that I have always felt and for the trust they have placed in me. I remember our first meeting when they welcomed me with open arms and said,
‘We are family’, these were not just words, they were made clear through every single act they took throughout my time with the Mumbai Indians.
Finally, I want to say a special thank you to my friends and family and especially my wife Gina and my three beautiful children for all the love, support and the many sacrifices they have made over the years and will continue to allow me to. Fulfilling my childhood dream of playing cricket at the highest levels for a long time.
Today I take this step with hope and excitement into the future knowing that I will take on a role in an organization whose values closely align with mine, where “we are family”
