Today’s Australians started promisingly and only went ahead and consolidated their dominance even further. Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith went on to score two and two centuries respectively as they made opponents work hard on the field not only with their style of play but also with their runs. The pair looked unstoppable and looked all set to run another full session together but in the final match that ended before the break a 251 stand broke as Labuschagne was sacked after reaching a sensational double weight.
Session summary – 28.1 overs, 109 runs and 1 wicket. So, another session of Test cricket played out and Australia are the ones who have just gone from strength to strength and look to be on their way to making a massive total. The West Indies will feel flat with the way they approached the morning session, but these big wickets at lunchtime will certainly provide them with plenty of inspiration when they take the field again.

Australia set the pointer for the remainder of the match with the lead of the batsmen on the first day. After David Warner fell early, Usman Khawaja and Marnos Labouchagne put together a massive stand that put the hosts ahead of the game. Usman Khawaja fell but Marnus Labuschagne went on to build another century stand with Stephen Smith and he brought in a single ton as well. The Australians will be looking for more of the same on day two. Stay tuned because the morning session is not far away.
The West Indies started out with a lot of promise on the field as youngster Jayden Sales got rid of David Warner early in the day but after that, they found it hard to keep going for long. Kyle Myers’ underappreciated skills as a bowler came to the rescue for the visitors as he broke a crucial stand but again the Windies could not capitalize. They hoped that the pitch would be paced and that they could get an early wicket on the second day to get back into the contest.

The day started with Jayden Sales disposing of David Warner early. However, Usman Khawaja and Marnos Labuschagne showed some grit and determination to ride through a difficult period when West Indies were bowling well in the first session. The runs began to flow rapidly in the afternoon session for the Australians as both Usman Khawaja and Marnos Labuschagne reached their fifties. Myers then breathed some life back into the Windies camp with a wicket late in the second session. However, after that Stephen Smith and Marnos Labouchagny did not give an inch to the West Indies and now the entire home team is looking to dominate this Test match. The first session will be decisive on the second day and the West Indies need to make better plans and execution going forward in this Test match.
Marnus Labuschagne stopped by for a chat. He says whenever you finish a day with almost 300 runs and 2 wickets lost it’s a great day and they will now be looking to get a big total on board. It pays to come from Brisbane to play on bouncy wickets like this, he adds, and if you’re patient and the technique is sound, you can score runs here. He mentions that when you don’t sign up, there is a bit of uncertainty but it’s all about trusting the process. He ends by saying that his wife and daughter made the trip to watch him play here and that makes this hundred even more special.
West Indies, well they tried really hard but the Australian batsmen were very good on the day. Kraigg Brathwaite tried all of his options but nothing worked and although there were a few plays and flops in between, it was a frustrating day from the Windies’ point of view. The new second ball is now eight overs, and the West Indies need to make the most of it early on the second day if they are to get back into this game.
Stephen Smith started the final session with a slam dunk that went well past first delivery and continued the same momentum throughout the session on his way to a fluent 59*. Marnus Labuschagne at the other end was also more energetic in this session and hit a valiant century and finished with an unbeaten knock of 154 as runs began to flow rapidly in favor of the Australians. They are in pole position now and we can expect the Australian batsmen to come in with more aggressive intentions on day two and will certainly try to get their first innings total somewhere over 500 now.
Australia dominated this session and are now in the driver’s seat at the end of day one. And she couldn’t get enough of the penetration throughout the day with the addition of 131 runs and the West Indies having started the morning on a positive note. More pressure on the Australians.
