Former spinner Maninder Singh criticized India’s team selectors and management for supporting veteran wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik for an extended period of time. Karthik was part of India’s squad for the recently concluded T20 World Cup, and was also preferred over Rishabh Pant for the preliminary matches of the tournament.

He returned to India’s T20I squad after an impressive display in IPL 2022 for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has played as a striker in the IPL and has shown domineering form with the bat scoring 330 runs at a strike rate of 183.33.

The Indian management also gave him the same role in the team but he failed to execute on the bouncy tracks in Australia as India were knocked out in the semi-finals after suffering a 10-wicket defeat by England. However, Karthik was dropped from the XI for the semi-final match after displaying below par in the group stages.

The former India player lashed out at Karthik and said the time he finished the India game was about four years ago in the Nida Cup final.

“I don’t know how India supported Dinesh Karthik for so long. I saw him finish just one match, and that too in the Nida final four years ago. Even in the T20 World Cup, he was supported to the hilt and he felt he was under pressure because of that striker’s tag. So if he was Someone is not performing, you need to make changes.

In the opening match of the T20 World Cup, Karthik could only score one run against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Karthik’s performance was unchanged after the 37-year-old was dismissed for just six runs against South Africa. He played his final match of the tournament against Bangladesh and managed just seven runs in that encounter.

Meanwhile, Maninder also criticized selectors for not selecting wrist spins for the ODI series against Bangladesh as he feels Kuldeep Yadav should get a long rope in the Indian team.

“We already made the mistake of not taking any wrist spinners in the T20 World Cup, and we also don’t take any wrist spinners in ODIs on the tour of Bangladesh. If you don’t bowl like Kuldip regularly, how will you know what they can offer with the preparation for the World Cup?”
