Some of the Indian techies, who switched to the major social media company Meta after leaving their stable jobs just two or three days ago, are among the 11,000 people laid off by the company.

Facebook has laid off 11,000 employees worldwide to cut costs.

Neelima Agarwal, an IT professional who joined Meta two days ago, posted on social media platform Linkedin, that she is among the people who have lost their jobs.

“Go to Canada from India Just 1 week ago and I joined meta 2 days ago after going through the long visa process. “The sad, unfortunate day has come and I have been laid off,” she said.

Neelmi quit her two-year-old job at Microsoft Office in Hyderabad to join Meta, according to her LinkedIn profile.

After working for more than three years at Amazon’s Bengaluru office, Vishwajeet Jha said he joined Meta three days ago and is now laid off.

“I joined Meta three days ago after waiting for the long visa process. Thanks to all the people who made this transition smooth. Really sad that this happened, my heart goes out to everyone affected by the layoffs.”

Indian employees of Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, were caught by surprise after the US company announced that it would lay off 11,000 employees globally or 13 percent of its workforce.

While no country-specific numbers have been released yet, Meta India employees are searching for clues about their future.

Company officials went incommunicado shortly after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a letter, which he had written to employees to announce the layoffs.

Zuckerberg promised a base salary of 16 weeks plus an additional two weeks for each year of service as a severance package for affected employees.

Raju Kadam, who was part of Meta’s technical team, said he has been in the US for 16 years and has never faced a job loss. He said, “I have an H1-B visa…I started my watch to leave the US today…I have been in the US for 16 years and had recessions in 2008, 2015 (oil) and 2020, but I never lost my job,” he said, adding His children are American citizens and their lives will be affected.

The layoffs at Meta come within a week of massive job cuts on social media platform Twitter.

As part of a cost-cutting exercise, Twitter reportedly fired about 7,500 people worldwide, including more than half of the people who worked for the company in India.
