Visitors Mumbai City FC came from two goals down to beat Chennai 6-2 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
Goals from Jorge Pereira Diaz, Greg Stewart, Vineeth Ray, Vineesh Dakshinamurthy, Alberto Noguera and Bipin Singh ensured Des Buckingham’s men beat Chennai in their backyard.
The first ten minutes of the game whistled as both teams tried to get a foothold in the game on the wet blades of glass.
Prasanth moved forward on the right side but the move fell through as Mandar Rao Desai’s challenge thwarted him.
In the 19th minute, Petar Sliskovic sent the engulfed fans in the stands into a frenzy when he headed the ball past MCFC goalkeeper Vorba Lacínpa finding Raheem Ali of the Croatian in the middle of the penalty area after hitting a cross from the left.
Mumbai tried to go forward with intent after falling behind, but Fallow was powerful at the heart of the Chennai defence, growing appreciation for the Senegalese back with every move he destroyed.
An enterprising Prasanth ran down the right flank around half an hour was pulled up to Sangowan who played Sliskovic in the center of the penalty area.
But the great striker was pushed off balance by MCFC’s stopper backwards as his shot hit the wrong side of the net.
Abdel Nasser Al-Khayati put the home team in good shape as he put the ball into the net with an instinctive shot from the right after his initial effort was saved. Sliskovic did a good job for the Dutchman with the ball after dribbling from the halfway line.
The visitors reduced the arrears with a strike from Jorge Pereira Diaz in the 34th minute.
Three minutes of extra time was signaled at the end of the first half and proved crucial as Debjit Majumder was shown yellow and Mumbai City FC were awarded a penalty to the Chennaiyin keeper and came a little late into the box.
Greg Stewart, who set up MCFC’s opening goal, made no mistake from the penalty spot as he coolly slotted the ball onto the left side of the net after Majumder had gone the wrong way.
Teams headed into the tunnel with all scores scoring two goals each to set up an exhilarating second period in which the hosts were set to record their first home win of the season.
Des Buckingham made two substitutions towards the end of the first half, substituting Mandar Desai and Lingmoya Ralt for Vineeth Rai and Vineesh Dakshinamurthy.
The changes paid off almost immediately as the visitors took the lead for the first time in the game and scored their third goal of the day in the 50th minute through Vineeth Ray.
Majumder parried an effort from Lallianzuala Chhangte after the Mumbai forward edged past a defender inside the penalty area before attempting to twist one of them with his left foot.
Mumbai 2 went up as Dakshinamurthy volleyed a left footed shot from outside the box to beat the CFC keeper.
Sajid Dutt and Vinci Barreto replaced Rahim Ali and Prasanth for the home team while Buckingham made a further change of form in Alberto Noguera in place of Jorge Diaz. Mumbai City capitalized on Briton’s third substitution of the night just as they did his first two with manager Noguera Iman responding by scoring MCFC’s fifth goal of the night.
Murtaza Fall came on for Ahmed Jahoh in the 68th minute at a point where Mumbai was already well into the match.
CFC captain Anirudh Thapa saw his dreadful header calmly collected by Lachinpa as the home side struggled to get back into the game. Berdaric decided to field remixes in the form of Gobi Justin and Sohail Pasha with the Indian pair replacing Thapa and Khayat.
Joby breathed some life into the game as he forced a diving save from an MCFC guard to deflect his massive effort off the exit, but that didn’t change the outcome.
With 10 minutes left in the game, Edwin Sydney replaced Ajith Kumar but Buckingham’s men added to Chennaiyin’s misery with a sixth goal in the first minute of extra time after scoring the 90th through Bipin Singh.
