Mumbai City Football Club fired a flurry of goals at the opposition once again when they beat FC Goa 4-1 in the Indian Premier League (ISL) at Mumbai Football Stadium on Thursday. Pereira Díaz’ brace has taken him to the top of the league’s top scorer list this season, while Lallianzwala Changte and Alberto Noguera are also top scorers. Iker Guarautxena was the only scorer for Gores as Edu Bedia got his second yellow card in the 79th minute.

The hosts made just one change to the starting line-up as Lalengmawia Ralte recovered from a shake-up and regained his place in the XI. The visitors made two changes that saw Bidya and Riddim Tlang return to the starting line-up. Princeton Rebelo and FC Goa’s top scorer Wael Al-Sedawy were relegated to the bench.
For the eighth time in nine matches, Mumbai City scored the first goal of the match. Brandon Fernandes was caught dozing on the ball when Rahul Bheke’s challenge put it in Greg Stewart’s path. The Scotsman saw Diaz’s path and played a perfectly weighted pass to the striker who put him at the far post in the 16th minute. Six minutes later, Vorba Lachinba’s fumble from a 25-yard shot from Guarrotxena towards FC Goa allowed them to equalise.
The Islanders regained the lead three minutes before the end of the first half. Left-back Aibanbha Dohling failed to intercept Ralte’s ball to Chhangte on the right. The winger pulled some defenders down before dribbled past them and slotted the ball into the net with his left foot.
After scoring three minutes before half-time, Diaz ensured Mumbai City FC scored a goal three minutes after half-time. Chhangte becomes the provider for this one as he squats it for Diaz inside the box. The Argentine striker straightened his feet and positioned himself to score his sixth goal of the season.
FC Goa was stuck on the back foot and never recovered. A quickly taken corner kick after seven minutes was only cleared up to Noguera on the edge of the penalty area. The Spaniard pulled the trigger from a distance and buried the curler into Dheeraj Singh’s goal. The evening did not end well for his compatriot in the other team, as Bedia received a second yellow for kicking the ball wide, and the gore finished with ten men.
The crushing win saw Mumbai City extend their lead at the top of the table by five points over Hyderabad FC. The Islanders will have a break during Game 10 and will return on Matchweek 11 to play East Bengal FC at Salt Lake Stadium on December 16. FC Goa’s goal difference took a beating and dropped them from fifth to sixth, just behind Kerala Blasters. Gorse will return home to host FC Odisha on December 10, Saturday.
