NEW YORK: Twitter’s new chief, Elon Musk, has asked employees to choose by Thursday between “Extremely hardcoreand working long hours, or losing their jobs, according to an internal memo I’ve seen France Press agency.

Tesla tycoon has come under fire for drastic changes to the social media company he bought for $44 billion late last month.

He fired half of the company’s 7,500 employees, scrapped a work-from-home policy, and imposed long hours, all while his attempts to fix Twitter met with chaos and delays.

Moving forward for a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 “To succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we’re going to need to be very, very tough,” Musk wrote in the internal memo.

“This means working long hours at a high intensity. Only exceptional performance will count as a passing grade,” he added.

Employees were asked to follow a link to confirm their commitment to the “new Twitter” by 5:00 p.m. New York time (2200 GMT) on Thursday.

If they don’t, they will lose their jobs, and receive three months of severance pay.

Twitter did not respond to France Press agency Requests for comment on the new procedure.

Since Musk took over Twitter, his bumbling attempts to revamp user verification with a controversial subscription service have led to a slew of fake accounts and pranks, and prompted major advertisers to turn away from the platform.

On Tuesday, Musk delayed relaunching Twitter’s paid subscription service Blue Verified.

Musk wants users to pay $8 for the coveted blue tick, which has so far been given free to verified accounts, giving power to public figures and the media to use Twitter.

However, the system has been suspended as accounts impersonating others — including Musk — proliferate.

The re-launch is now scheduled for November 29th.

‘another person’

Musk said on Wednesday that his overhaul of the company’s “organizational structure” would take place this week.

“I expect to shorten my time at Twitter and find someone else to run Twitter over time,” he said after an “initial explosion of activity” of the company’s reorganization.

Musk was speaking at a court hearing related to his $50 billion wage package at Tesla, the electric car giant.

A South African billionaire has been accused by a shareholder of being a part-time CEO of Tesla, saying the board of directors did not sufficiently scrutinize compensation.

Musk warned Twitter employees that the company risks bankruptcy if it is not fixed quickly.

In recent days, Musk has carried out more firings, firing an engineer in a tweet after he publicly criticized decisions under the new leadership.

“I would like to apologize for firing these geniuses,” Musk wrote on Twitter. “Their immense talent would undoubtedly be of great use elsewhere.”
