Odisha FC beat East Bengal 4-2 in a superb attacking display in the second half of Vivekananda Yuba Bharathi Krerangan’s Indian Premier League match on Friday.

Pedro Martin scored twice as Giri and Nandhakumar scored twice to overturn goals from Simpoi Haukip and Norem Singh.

After a virtuous start to the match, Simboy Huckip’s first real chance fell after Odisha gave up the ball in defense after a block from the tall goalkeeper of Charis Kiriakou. The ball went out to VP Suhair as he lobbed it into the middle, Haokip headed in the fifth minute.

A minute later, he saw Odisha first on target after a great cross by Reinier Fernandes was just headed in by Diego Mauricio.

In the 14th minute, Jordan O’Doherty headed in Mahesh Noarm Singh on the left wing, but his curtailment was cleared by a well-timed leg-out from Usama Malik.

Arguably the next minute East Bengal captain, Clayton Silva, had the easiest of chances to get his team the lead when some busy plays from a harmless throw-in saw him lead the field just past the keeper.

Saul Crespo though didn’t give up the chase and managed to thwart Cleiton as he was about to shoot as his effort went straight to Amrinder Singh in the goal.

Come on in the 23rd minute, East Bengal eventually took the lead.

Semboi Haokip was given the chance by VP Suhair after Jordan O’Doherty found the winger on the right with a perfectly synced chip over the top. The Odisha defense was caught dozing off when Seher’s square pass to Hawkeye saw the speedy Amrinder look on helplessly.

The Red and Golden Brigade doubled their lead in the 35th minute after the referee played an advantage with Kyriakou, who fell to the ground. And soon the ball went to Suhair, who pushed in the left side this time. His cross was met by a sliding Naorim Singh as he slotted the effort past the goalkeeper.

Odisha could have pulled one back in the 39th minute as Nandakumar Sekar swept the defense as Reinier Fernandes’s powerful header narrowly missed the goal from a few yards out.

After the restart, Odisha manager Josep Gombau made some changes to give life to their unconvincing attack. Pedro Martin was introduced and made an immediate impact, scoring twice to bring Odisha level.

Two minutes in, Diego Mauricio got the ball and hit it into the path of Martin, who managed to lose his marker and shoot the ball. His effort deflected home past goalkeeper Kamaljeet Singh.

In the 48th minute, Martin took advantage of some weak hitting again as Diego Mauricio won a cross from the left to get the ball to Martin. Unmarked, he passed it past Kamaljet.

Another first-half substitute, Giri completed Odisha’s comeback in the 65th minute.

Nandhakumar holds the ball well on the left flank without any pressure from the East Bengal defence. He passed it to Denechandra Meitei on the overlap as his cross was perfect for the unmarked Jerry to bring it home.

In the 76th minute, it was Nandhakumar’s turn to score as the East Bengal defence, who had been napping occasionally, fell asleep.

A long diagonal ball from the right was again well handled by Nandhakumar Sekar, slashing past Ankit Mukherjee with a lucky bounce and slotting past Kamaljit’s blunt.

East Bengal fans ended up with tears in their eyes after beating Bengaluru away from home and there were tears again as they failed to win any home match so far.
