former India Opener Akash Chopra questioned Prithvi Shaw’s exclusion from the Indian squad for the New Zealand series. As seniors like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma etc. go home after T20 Globalism Under the Down Cup, the selection committee appointed a group of young people for the tour. However, they overlooked Shaw again despite the fact that the young man was among the contestants on the local circuit.

Chopra said, in a tweet, that Shaw’s presence could have given India an extra advantage in the powerplays; Something that was a weak link for the team in the game’s shortest format. He added that this is the right moment to play someone who is naturally destructive in his approach. The Indian team was heavily criticized for its slow scoring rate in the Huskies. At the T20 World Cup earlier this month, the Men in Blue appeared to be struggling to get off to a good start.

Shaw failed to earn a call-up to the New Zealand series despite performing well in the domestic series.

In the 2022-23 edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he produced impressive performances in which he scored 285 runs from seven matches at an average of 47.50 and a strike rate of 191.27 with a century and a half.

Commenting on Prithvi Shaw’s exclusion from the team, BCCI Selection Team Chief Chetan Sharma said they have been in constant contact with him and the batsman will get his chance soon. “He (Shaw) will definitely get his chance. The selectors are in constant touch with him, talking to him, he’s fine, he’ll get his chances very soon,” Sharma told the media while announcing the squad for the tour of New Zealand.

After their disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup, India will be keen to make a statement when they take on the Kiwis in a three-match T20i and ODI series.

The selectors fielded several young players for the series to showcase their potential at the international level. The teams featured Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill. Team India will look for a new aggressive approach with the upcoming T20 World Cup in mind.

The team will be led by Hardik Pandya in the shortest form of the game. Shikhar Dhawan will take over the driving duties in the over-50 formula. Rishabh Pant has been appointed as vice-captain for the tour.
