Australia took on the first Test in Perth on Friday as Pat Cummins bagged his 200th wicket while bowling the mighty West Indies and then piled on more runs to extend their lead to a lead of 344.

The visitors were dismissed for 283 in the final session of the third day after the hosts declared their first innings at 598-4 on the back of double centuries from Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith.

David Warner, 17, and Labushagne, at number three, then achieved home advantage for Australia after choosing not to follow through to bat again, with Usman Khawaja the only victim, out for five as it made it 29-1.

The West Indies, who had not won a Test on Australian soil in 25 years, started at 74-0 and lunched with newcomer Tagnarin Chanderpaul losing for 51 and with Nkrumah Bonner retiring after being hit to the head by Cameron Green’s delivery.

But Cummins bowled fellow and captain Kraigg Brathwaite for 64 shortly after the break – his 200th Test – and the momentum slipped in Australia’s favour.

Three wickets fell in the second session before Mitchell Stark took the new ball and proved almost unplayable, dismissing Kyle Myers and Joshua da Silva in four deliveries.

Greene was thrown into the cauldron for his second spell and stubborn Shamar Brooks accounted for Bonner’s concussion replacement as they lost 6-38.

Cummins took 3-34 and Starc 3-51, but Australia also bowled an astonishing 27 feet from their 38 overs.

Brathwaite and Chanderpaul – son of the West Indies great Shivnarine – negotiated 25 hostile overs before stumps on Thursday.

Stark said he, Cummins and Josh Hazlewood played too short and adjusted accordingly on Friday.

It paid instant dividends with Hazlewood extracting Chanderpaul’s bat the first time and David Warner collecting comfortably at the slip.

Chanderpaul’s death came off 51 balls after he hit a maiden Test half-century to match the century he made in a warm-up match last week to showcase his vast potential.

Cummins was a constant threat, batting regularly, but Brathwaite, who resumed on 18, showed plenty of grit and fight to bring in his 28th Test half-century.

But he had no answer for Cummins in the fourth innings after lunch with a perfect delivery rattling at his stump, ending the innings of 166 balls.

Bonner took a hit to the head in eight and continued with a new helmet after treatment for another six overs, adding eight more runs, but eventually left the field.

Left-hander Myers came in on Brathwaite but never settled and he chipped in off Starc with the West Indies losing two wickets for seven runs.

Veteran Jason Holder pinned the ship with a stout 27 before urging Warner to catch him on the slip off Nathan Lyon’s delivery.

Starc took the new ball after tea and bowled before generating a full, straight delivery that shook the pads of Jermaine Blackwood, who was out lbw for a brave 36.

Then, the left-arm big-footer cleaned Joshua da Silva before Green took over as the West Indies collapsed.
