KARACHI: The think tanks of the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) will gather together on Wednesday (today) in Lahore to discuss various important matters related to the national camp for future international events, especially the Olympic Qualifiers.

“Yes, after the national event in Quetta which concluded on Monday night, our actual work has begun. Tomorrow we will sit down alongside the national coach to discuss when and where we will set up camp for future vital international assignments which also include Olympic qualifiers,” said PBF Secretary Col. (Ret.) Nasser Tong to “The News” on Tuesday.

“Besides the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers, we also have to compete in the AFC U-22 Championships in Thailand in January,” Nasser was quick to add. Asked about when the camp is expected to start, Nasir said that although it will not be held immediately, they have to plan for it as many arrangements will be made for it.

The first thing is to decide in principle when and where we will camp, and then in the next step we will make arrangements for that. Nasser added that the Navy is interested in hosting the camp and we will consider this option.

He said the limited force would be focused on. You know we can’t set up any big camp because the state doesn’t help us. We plan to work with six or eight high quality boxers. “We will plan how to equip them and how to train them on foreign soil, which is very important,” Nasser said.

He was glad that at least the boxers were being kept in good shape. “Boxers are having events and that’s a good thing I think. The national event in Quetta wrapped up on Monday and there will be an inter-departmental event at the end of January in Karachi. It’s good that the boys are busy,” said the official.

It is worth noting here that the course of qualifying for the Olympic Boxing Games has changed for the Paris Games. Next year’s Asian Games, which will be held in Hangzhou, China, from Sept. 23 to Oct. 8, will be a qualifying round.

In 2024, there will be two world qualifying tournaments, which means that national boxers will have three opportunities to squeeze into the Olympic benches. The 2004 Athens Olympics was the last in which the national fighters flexed their muscles. Since then they have not been able to make cuts in the world’s most luxurious splendor.

Nasir said that in the Asian Games Pakistan will play in seven weights. “We will also discuss the weights we should focus on keeping in mind the major events,” the official said. He said that in Wednesday’s meeting, the recently held national championship will be discussed and the boxers’ performance will be evaluated before making final decisions.

Nasir said that at the national event in Quetta, some brave lads from the Police and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) were scouted and would be called to the camp for their polishing. “These weren’t exceptional boys,” Nasir said, “but they were good enough to work with and could be made into strong boxers.”
