A shocking report surfaced just days before the opening match of the tournament between Qatar and Ecuador, alleging that the hosts had bribed eight Ecuadorian players $7.5 million to throw the match.

Amjad Taha, the regional head of the British Center for Middle East Studies and Research, published a heartbreaking tweet that read:Qatar bribed eight Ecuadorean players $7.4 million to lose the opening match (1-0, the other half). five diagonals and #Ecador Insiders confirmed this. We hope you are wrong. We hope that sharing this will influence the outcome. The world must oppose FIFA corruption.”

The World Cup has already been rocked by several controversies even before the ball was kicked in the Middle Eastern country, such as the organizers’ inhumane treatment of migrant workers brought in to build the infrastructure needed for the global event.

Qatar has also faced backlash over its views on the LGBTQ community with many organizations protesting against it.

The organizers also dropped a bombshell two days before the opening, stating that no alcoholic beverages would be served inside the stadium.

There were also reports that the country had also paid people to participate in rallies in preparation for the World Cup, which the organizers also later denied.

The World Cup tournament begins on November 20th and runs until December 18th as the hosts participate for the first time ever in the biggest sporting event.
