Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro review: Comfortable fit and sound quality

Samsung is a big brand and it has spread its wings in different directions. The company has slowly built an ecosystem of products ranging from mobile devices to tablets to wearables and ever-improving hearing aids.

The new Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro looks to build on the appeal of this series, which lost its signature touch somewhat last year. The True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds segment is filled with options, and Samsung needs to up the ante to make the new Galaxy Buds2 Pro a competent force.

So, we decided to take these new earbuds for a spin, and during our use this week, we got a closer look at how the new Galaxy Buds2 Pro has evolved to give a polished product. Here’s our review that will give you all the details.

Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro review: What’s so cool?

The first things you notice about the Galaxy Buds2 Pro are the design, fit, and finish of the charging case and earbuds. Samsung claims that the earbuds are 15 percent smaller than their predecessors. Fits Galaxy Buds2 Pro comfortably and you are not worried about the buds falling out of your ears in any case.

The decision to go with a matte finish for the buds and case can elicit mixed opinions, but we somewhat prefer it over the glossy finish that most brands embrace. Galaxy Buds2 Pro weighs just 5.5g and its tip grip is solid, ensuring there are no gaps between the ear canal to let any noise pass through.

We also liked the size of the overall package, which can easily fit in your pocket and not feel like a bulge. The other important part is that the Galaxy Buds2 Pro is water and sweat resistant thanks to its IPX7 rating.

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Buds2 Pro with all the bells and whistles that premium earbuds have to offer these days. If you own a Galaxy S series smartphone or one of the latest foldable smartphones from the company, you can take advantage of smooth codec, spatial audio, high bitrate audio, and other such features. Even with non-Samsung phones, we didn’t notice any glaring difference in quality or active noise cancellation performance.

This brings us to the main aspects of these earbuds – active noise cancellation and sound quality. How do they behave in terms of competition that is in the segment? We’ve already talked about the tight fitment of the buds and paired it up with Samsung’s use of Active Noise Cancellation, you’ve got the perfect recipe for an isolated experience.

Just wear it, and you won’t be bothered by the surrounding noise, whether it’s indoors with your pet going crazy, or if you’re walking down a busy street. As for sound quality, Samsung’s tuning of the earbuds with 10mm drivers from AKG delivers the best possible results.

The sound is lively, the bass doesn’t blast through your ear canals but manages to find the perfect balance when playing heavy tracks, without losing touch with the sounds in the background. With the classics, the earbuds find their right notes touching the middle in the sweet spot. Overall, there is very little to complain about the sound that comes through the Galaxy Buds2 Pro.

Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro review: What’s not cool?

Samsung offers 24-bit hi-fi sound quality but the sad part is that you need a Samsung Galaxy phone to get the best quality. Samsung’s decision to reduce the size of the earbuds means you have to deal with a smaller battery inside.

The company claims 5 hours with ANC turned on, and up to 13 hours with the charging case. Now, most people will find it satisfying, but when the stakes are high and you play in an excellent field, the levels should match the best. Unfortunately, Samsung failed to rise to the top. Finally, it would be unfair to end the review without talking about the onboard microphones. While using these earbuds for meetings, I was told my voice was a hiss and it felt an echo. Hopefully, a software update can fix tuning microphones to make you sound better on calls.

Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro review: Should you buy?

Samsung has improved the new Galaxy Buds2 Pro on several fronts – active noise cancellation, narrow-edged earphones and improved sound quality. Slight design tweaks help the Galaxy Buds2 Pro fit comfortably in your ears. The sound quality will make most of you happy, especially when you can block out all the surrounding noise. Tuning from AKG delivers balanced sound, no matter what genre you prefer to listen to.

Having said that, the sounds can feel a bit scratchy and the small size of the earbuds means the battery life isn’t seeing any improvement. Also, limiting some high-end features to Samsung Galaxy phones means that Samsung is playing the ecosystem game in the market. Contrasted with the Sony WF-1000XM4, the Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro is the new Google Pixel Buds Pro and it’s fair to say it’s up to the challenge in most cases and gets our vote if you’re in the market for premium TWS earbuds.
