1950 USA 1 England 0

England arrived in Brazil as one of the favorites for the tournament, having chosen to play in the World Cup for the first time.

1966 North Korea 1 Italy 0

Pak Doo-ik wrote his name into World Cup folklore with a goal that stunned a mighty Italian team and knocked the Azzurri out of the tournament.

The Italian team returned to Rome to be pelted with tomatoes by disgruntled fans. North Korea’s run in the quarter-finals ended with a 5-3 loss to Portugal inspired by Eusebio.

1982 Algeria 2 West Germany 1

Algeria reached the World Cup finals in Spain as the outsiders, playing the North African team in their first ever World Cup finals.

But goals from Rabah Madjer and Lakhdar Belloumi on either side of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s goal ensured a famous victory.

The Algerian championship ended sadly with the infamous “disgrace of Gijon” when West Germany beat Austria 1-0 in a win-win result that propelled both teams through to the second round.

1990 – Cameroon 1 Argentina 0

Argentina started the finals in Italy as the defending champions after their Diego Maradona-inspired victory at the 1986 tournament in Mexico.

But even Maradona wasn’t able to prevent Cameroon’s “indomitable lions” from pulling off a huge upset as François Omam-Beek scored the winning goal at Milan’s San Siro.

Cameroon, who finished with nine players, would go on to reach the quarter-finals.

2002 Senegal 1 France 0

France, the 1998 World Cup champions and Euro 2000 winners again, were expected to make a deep World Cup tour of South Korea and Japan.

But Senegal, making their World Cup debut, derailed France’s hopes as Papa Bouba Diop scored the only goal in another upset at the opening of the tournament.

France will be eliminated in the first round.
