A 17-year-old footballer, whose right leg had to be amputated after undergoing surgery to rupture a ligament seven days ago, died Tuesday morning from multiple organ failure.

Priya (17 years old) was a B.Sc (Physical Education) student and underwent ligament surgery at Peripheral Government Hospital, Periyar Nagar on November 7.

The girl developed complications after a compression bandage was applied to prevent bleeding, which reduced blood flow to the leg. After complications persisted, the girl was referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) on 8 November and had her right leg amputated.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said the footballer was admitted to the RGGH intensive care unit, but had multiple organ failures and died on Tuesday morning.
