Redmi is the so-called affordable cousin of the Xiaomi family. Like other brands, it started its journey as a smartphone brand and then slowly moved to other segments. Xiaomi is already presenting its tablet in the market and now it’s time for Redmi but with a different focus. Redmi Pad is the latest Android tablet in the world India It’s aimed at target audiences who still limit their use of the tablet to watching movies or browsing the web, and by the looks of it, there are quite a few users in this range.
The Redmi Pad tablet is available at a starting price of Rs 14,999 where you also have Realme and Oppo fighting it out. We’ve been using the Redmi Pad for over a week, and here’s our review that speaks to its value in this space.
Redmi Pad review: What’s cool
Budget tablets have grown up, and they’re totally loved now. After using the new tablets in the market, we set our expectations for the Redmi tablet, and fortunately those expectations came out well. The premium metal chassis is a refreshing sign of space tablets, which no longer seem like an afterthought.
Along with that, you get a frame design that is 7.1mm slim and also lightweight at less than 500g. All these features allow you to hold the tablet without feeling its weight. The matte finish is another bonus to its build and any day a better option than the glossy backplates we usually get.
The Redmi Pad features a 10.61 inch LCD panel but what you do get is a 90Hz refresh rate screen which makes it better than the rest in this segment. In most cases, the screen will make you happy but the lack of an oleophobic coating means that you will easily notice smudges on the screen and need to wipe them down every time.
The tablet has been awarded Widevine L1 certifications which means you can enjoy full JD content on many OTT platforms, including Netflix.
Performance is another big advantage that you get with the Redmi Pad. It is powered by the MediaTek Helio G99 chipset, and it is a 4G enabled yet fully capable device that handles daily tasks and a few gaming sessions without a hitch. You can play popular game titles at high refresh rate settings, where you will notice slight stuttering but nothing that will be a deal breaker.
The other big advantage of using this tablet is that you get an expandable storage slot, which goes up to 1TB if needed. Redmi has added quad speakers powered by Dolby Atmos which does the trick and in most cases we relied on the built-in unit for watching movies.
MIUI 13 Pad version running Android 12 is a big plus for us since it doesn’t have much bloatware. The overall UI experience was very good but it’s fair to say that Android on tablets still needs improvement from the developer end.
Redmi Pad is equipped with an 8000mAh battery that lasts for days, making sure that you are not searching for the charger frequently. During our video loop test, we started using the tablet at about 80 percent, and after more than 4 hours of streaming, the battery was down to 20 percent, which is pretty solid.
Redmi Pad review: what doesn’t sound great?
Redmi Pad for some reason is not getting a cellular variant in India. The cameras are basic and we suggest you don’t expect too much from it, especially the unit on the back.
The tablet doesn’t have a fingerprint sensor, so you only have software-focused face unlock or a PIN lock for security. The tablet also doesn’t have a headphone jack, and the gigantic 8,000mAh battery only supports 18W charging, which takes hours to fully charge.
Redmi Pad review: Should you buy?
The Redmi Pad has more advantages than disadvantages, which makes it a good choice for tablet buyers. You have a large screen with a high refresh rate, storage capacity is expandable, performance is reliable and battery life is solid. The software could definitely improve and the cameras could use a tweak or two, too. Overall, the Redmi Pad is a good Android tablet that we can easily recommend.
