New IPL chief Aaron Dumal sees the first T20 cricket tournament becoming the world’s largest sports league in the next five years, and says the board also has a clear vision for the women’s IPL tournament.
Speaking to PTI, Domal talked about his long-term plans for the IPL, why there can be no more than 10 teams and why BCCI will stick to its long-standing position on not allowing Indian players to participate in overseas leagues.
The IPL has become the world’s second most valuable sports league in terms of value per match after media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle fetched a staggering Rs 48,390 crore.

Although the IPL window is much shorter compared to soccer leagues such as the EPL or NFL in the United States, the IPL will likely have an exclusive window of two and a half months with a maximum of 94 matches with 10 teams.
Domal said continuous innovation is the need of the hour and there is no reason why the IPL cannot become the largest sports league worldwide.
“The IPL will be much bigger than it is and it will become the number one sports league in the world,” Domal told PTI when asked how the BCCI plans to raise the bar for the crown jewel in Indian cricket.
Fans have greatly contributed to what became the IPL and Domal said plans are in place to dramatically improve the viewing experience.
“We are definitely looking at various innovations that can be introduced to make it more fan-friendly. For those who watch it on TV and those who try it out on the field, we want them to have a better experience.
“If we can prepare the IPL schedule in advance, people from all over the world can plan their travel accordingly. It should be a value-for-money experience for the fans.”
The difference will remain at 10 only.
BCCI has cleared more than Rs 12,000 crore by adding two new teams to the competition but it is unlikely to exceed the figure of 10, the IPL chief said.
A total of 74 matches have been held this season, and in the new cycle, the number of matches could rise to 94 with current teams.
“The teams are only going to stay at 10. If you increase that, it becomes difficult to get the championship in one go. We are looking at 74 games to start with the first two seasons, then 84 games, and if things allow, it could be 94 in the fifth year of the season,” Domal said. media rights cycle, this will make it a long enough event.”

“Women’s IPL will be a world class property”
The inaugural edition of the World Wide Web Fair will take place in March of next year with five teams but the teams haven’t been sold yet. There is a lot of interest in buying teams and there is a possibility that they will operate from smaller centers in India.
“The way we plan for this IPL woman is that we will have a new group of fans to join the game. There are a lot of fans who have added to the IPL fan base and this tournament will only add to that and many want to pursue the sport as a career. “We are working on making it one of the best women’s cricket tournaments in the world. What we did in the IPL, we want to do something similar with WIPL.”
