Twitter rolls out Blue Checkmark subscription at $7.99 per month in some countries, says more updates soon

Twitter Inc on Saturday launched its new feature of charging $7.99 a month for its “Blue Checkmark” service, which includes a “verification” badge required if users sign up now. This development comes days after the existence of the new Twitter owner Elon Musk Advertise blue check mark subscription services.

“The current Twitter Lords and Peasants system for those with or without a blue checkmark is bullshit. Power to the people! Blue for $8 a month,” Musk said in a tweet, adding that the price will be adjusted to “state in PPP terms.”

A blue check mark next to the person’s username on the social media platform means that Twitter has confirmed that the account belongs to the person or company claiming it. Twitter is currently free for most users.

“Starting today, we’re adding great new features to Twitter Blue, and we have more on the way soon. Get Twitter Blue for $7.99 per month if you sign up now,” the company said in a statement.

Launching Twitter Blue at $7.99, the social media giant stated that a “Blue Checkmark: Power for People” subscription allows users to get blue checkmarks “just like the celebrities, companies, and politicians you already follow.”

He also listed other features that will follow soon, which include better ads, posting longer videos, and prioritizing higher quality content.

Twitter Blue users who “support Twitter in the fight against bots” will soon be “rewarded with half of the ads made relevant twice.” They will be able to post longer videos and prioritizing content will allow for priority ratings in replies, mentions, and searches. This helps reduce the appearance of scams, spam, and bots.

Twitter Blue with Verification is currently available on iOS in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Musk laid off half his workforce on Friday, but said the cuts were smaller in the team responsible for preventing the spread of misinformation. Teams responsible for communications, content curation, human rights and machine learning ethics were among those, as were some production and engineering teams, according to tweets posted by the social media company’s employees.

In a tweet, Musk stated that the service is seeing a “massive revenue decline” from advertisers pulling back.

Musk blamed the losses on a coalition of civil rights groups that had been pressing Twitter’s top advertisers to take action if it did not protect content moderation — and concerns mounted ahead of Tuesday’s pivotal US congressional elections.
