Dubai: Sri Lankan footballer Wanindu Hasaranga has taken the top spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Bowling Rankings from Afghanistan after his continued brilliance in the ICC T20 Globalism Australian Cup, where the island nation’s campaign was halted in the Super 12 stage.

Hasaranga’s rise means that Rashid Khan’s reign at the top of the bowling rankings was short-lived after he was charismatic. Afghanistan Spinner pushed Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood off the lead, after a solid start to the T20 World Cup.

The Sri Lankan spinner took 15 wickets during his team’s World Cup campaign, more than any other player by the end of the Super 12 stage, and reclaimed the top spot it last occupied in November 2021.

He finished the tournament with enviable numbers 3/13 against Afghanistan and 2/23 against England, adding extra weight to his reputation as one of the best riders in the world.

In 52 matches, Hasaranga has now collected 86 wickets with an average of just 14.48 and an impressive economy of 6.67. The 25-year-old has a good hitter too, but a lack of time in the middle during the T20 World Cup prevented him from moving up the rankings, and he remains at number eight.

There are no Indian personalities in the top ten in bowling rankings, with Hardik Pandya being the only player by Rohit Sharma to be ranked 3rd in the ICC all-player rankings. Shawn Williams of Zimbabwe is the only newcomer in the top 10, while Pakistan’s Shadab Khan is on the rise, jumping 10 places to 15.

The lack of England’s Moein Ali saw him and Sikander Raza move to sixth and fourth places respectively, with Raza heavily involved in Zimbabwe’s impressive run in the T20 World Cup.

There is one new player in the top 10 in the bowling alley as well, with England’s Adel Rashid rising to eighth, one point ahead of fellow countryman Sam Curran.

Pathum Nissanka reached 10 in the latest speculator rankings, which is the only change in the higher tiers of that list. Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliance means he is still at the top and enjoys an extended advantage in the position and a career high rating of 869.

Yadav’s innings against Zimbabwe helped secure his top spot, with Pakistan’s Muhammad Rizwan, New Zealand’s Devon Conway and Babar Azam making the top four.

On top of that, it’s the New Zealand Finns and India’s KL Rahul who are moving up, climbing six and five places respectively and coming close to breaking into the top ten.
