What is Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor and his Location :

What is Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor ?

This sensor is basically a thermistor. Location : It is installed in the engine cooling system and sets the temperature of the engine coolant. If the coolant temperature is low Then This sensor tells the ECM.

Then the following tasks are performed.

1. RPM is controlled.

2. The timing of fuel injection is controlled.

3. Ignition timing is controlled.

So that the engine can perform better in cold condition and warm up as soon as possible. To bring the engine to its working temperature.

Types of Thermistor :

There are two types of thermistors:

  1. NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient)
  2. PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient)

Temperature —————- Resistance

Thermistor Working system

Reading In NTC :

If temperature is 60° C then resistance is 16Ω ohm.

If temperature is 90° C then resistance is 9Ω ohm.

Reading In PTC :

If temperature is 60° C then resistance is 6Ω ohm.

If temperature is 90° C then resistance is 13Ω ohm.

Location of Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor :

It is always attach there where the coolant inside the engine circulates. Mostly it is attached to the thermostat valve hoses.
Sometimes some vehicles have these two sensors. The second sensor indicates the coolant temperature as the coolant comes through the radiator.
