BCCI on Friday made a massive decision, something that appears to be a result of India’s shocking exit from the recently completed T20 Globalism 2022 Cup in Australia. The Indian Cricket Board sacked the selection committee led by Chetan Sharma with immediate effect and at the same time called for new applications for the vacant post. The application deadline is November 28.

The senior national selector usually gets a term of four years, subject to extension. However, Harvinder Singh, Sunil Joshi and Debasish Mohanty served for the shortest period of time as senior domestic selectors. Joshi and Harvinder were appointed as national selectors in February 2020. After the AGM in January 2021, Chetan took over as the chairman of the selectors and Mohani and Kuruvila joined him.

According to news agency PTI, the new selection committee will be required to select captains across three formats, effectively implementing the divided command concept.

This also suggests that while Rohit may continue as the leader in Tests and ODIs, the all-rounder Hardik Pandya may be handed the helm in the shortest formula until the USA-West Indies T20 World Cup in 2024.

During the reign of Chetan Sharma, India He failed to reach the knockout stage of the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup, losing the final of the World Test Championship and losing the semi-final to England in Australia last week.

“For Chetan to save his job, India needed to win the T20 World Cup. Nothing less could have saved him. But once, he was asked to pick four teams at once (series outside New Zealand and Bangladesh) which was unprecedented, one can read between the lines”.

Added responsibilities

The scope of work has two main points that have not been mentioned before in any previous selection committee announcements – prepare and submit relevant team performance appraisal reports to the BCCI’s Apex Board on a quarterly basis, and assign a team leader in each format.

Also, for the first time, the BCCI’s scope of work description contains that the President is required to address the media regarding inquiries regarding the team.
