While we invest our energy every night in an account hours of sleep We used to think that eight hours of sleep would energize us, and we often forget that the most important thing is the quality of sleep.

The truth is, you can sleep as long as eight hours and you may still feel drowsy, tired, and sluggish. To really feel relaxed and prepare the body for a new day, Quantity It’s not the only thing you should consider.

Sleep is a broad topic. The right type of sleep may be different for each person. It is first important to understand what a good night’s sleep is.

Determine the quality of sleep

“Poor sleep and sleep deprivation can have many negative effects. These can be physiological effects, including an increased risk of stroke, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Negative effects can also be psychological, such as increased irritability, development of anxiety, or Depression, says Danielle Pacheco of the Sleep Foundation.

Many people think that sleep itself is just one long phase of unconsciousness. However, the body goes through four different stages of sleep. During these phases, our body temperature changes and so does our breathing patterns.

The stages are mainly divided into two parts: REM sleep and non-REM sleep. REM sleep is the fourth stage while the other three stages occur in non-REM sleep.

The last stage of non-REM sleep is the so-called deep sleep. It is also known as “slow wave sleep” and the first half of the night is spent in this stage. Up to 23% of a night’s sleep involves deep sleep, and periods of sleep get shorter each time we move through the stages.

Deep sleep is the time for the body to truly relax. Breathing slows and muscles, including those in the heart, relax. Experts believe that this is the most important phase of the night as this phase serves the purpose of recovery and promotes growth and recovery.

“Sleep also contributes to human development. Because of this, infants, children, and teens need more sleep than adults. People of all ages need sleep to prevent illness or recover from illness or injury,” Pacheco adds.

If this stage, i.e. your deep sleep (and REM sleep), is disturbed, then your hours of sleep don’t matter. Sleeping eight hours with REM can lead to lethargy and affect your ability to function properly the next day.

“There are other sleep disorders that can cause sleepiness despite seven to eight hours of sleep, including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and delayed sleep phase,” says Dr. Susil Patel of the Johns Hopkins Sleep Center, adding that interruptions during the night are common. .

Signs that you are not getting a good night’s sleep

While it is, of course, difficult to determine the type of sleep you get each night, there are some telltale signs in your behavior the next day that can help you determine the quality of your sleep.

“A person’s symptoms can depend on how sleep-deprived they are and whether it’s acute or chronic,” says Eric Soni, formerly an information specialist at the National Cancer Institute.

Here are some behavioral signs:

Waking up tired: If you don’t cook and clean while you sleep, why do you wake up feeling tired? Waking up exhausted is the most common sign of deep, interrupted sleep.

Nap during the day: Whether it’s planned or unplanned, if your eyelids droop all day or at least for a few hours, it could be because you’re not getting a restful night’s sleep. Your body may be begging for actual rest and not just sleep at night.

Lack of focus: Alertness is greatly affected by sleep. The inability to concentrate and focus on daily tasks during the day may be due to the quality of sleep last night. If you are not well rested, you may end up performing poorly at work.

irritabilitySleep deprivation can lead to unavoidable irritability. Are you bothered by things that don’t bother you? Notice if you are getting impatient and losing your temper more quickly than usual.

bad memory Just as the ability to focus is affected, other cognitive functions can also be affected. One of them is memory. Obviously, short-term working memory may be affected and you may feel “late” throughout the day.
