Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic says John Herdmann needs to “learn a few things” after he accused the Canada coach of ignoring him following his side’s 4-1 victory in the match. Globalism Grudge Cup match on Sunday.

Dalic claimed Herdmann lacked respect earlier this week after the Canadian coach’s sloppy attempt to inspire his team after losing to Belgium in their group opener.

In a television interview, Herdmann told his players: “You belong here. And we’ll go to Croatia.”

In response to Herdman’s rant, Croatian newspaper 24 Sata published a full-page photo of a naked man under the head of Canada’s manager, with maple leaf flags over his mouth and private parts and a headline that translates as “You’ve got a mouth, but do you have balls, too?”

The Croatians let football do the talking as Andrej Kramaric brace and goals from Marco Livaga and Lovro Madjer sent them top of Group F and condemned Canada to an early exit.

But Dalic was still exasperated by the row in his post-match press conference where he suggested Herdmann had deliberately ignored the traditional handshake at the final whistle.

“I went to the field to see my players. I didn’t see the other coach. Whether I lose or win, I always see the other coach. He wasn’t there and that’s his way of doing things,” Dalic said.

“He’s obviously crazy. He’s a good coach, he’s a good professional. It’s going to take him some time to learn some things.”

When asked if he thought he missed the rant after the Belgium game, Herdman was initially defiant, telling reporters: “Not in the first 20 minutes (of the Croatia game), no.

“Maybe they are celebrating now, and that’s their right, they achieved the goals, but we didn’t give them an easy night.”

But the Englishman eventually conceded that he would learn from the controversy, saying, “I could have been more coherent than coming out of the rally. That’s my learning. I’ll take that on the chin.”

strength and quality

Dalic was relieved to see Croatia respond to the shock of Alfonso Davies’ opener in the second minute at Khalifa International Stadium.

The 2018 runners-up will advance to the last 16 if they avoid losing in their final group match against Belgium on Thursday.

“In the first minutes they scored goals, but we managed to fight and stabilize ourselves,” Dalic said.

“We’re back on our feet. It makes me proud. Croatia once again showed strength and quality. We have to go to the next stage. That’s our ultimate goal.”

Davies’ goal was Canada’s first at the World Cup after four previous goalless defeats.

Although they were unable to end this losing streak, Herdman was encouraged by their spirited performance.

“In terms of team mentality, we’ve shown that little Canada can rival the best in the world,” he said.

“I am proud of what they achieved tonight. They made some history for our country.

“The goal was a very special moment to feel that, at this stage against this kind of team.”
