Dubai: The International Criminal Court said on Sunday Afghanistan The government supports the constitution of the world body and has agreed “in principle” to resume women’s cricket in the country.
Afghan cricket, especially the women’s game, was plunged into uncertainty last year due to drastic changes in the political landscape after the Taliban takeover of the country.
There have been reports that Afghan women, including the country’s women’s cricket team, have been banned from playing sports under the Taliban administration.
Then the ICC set up a working group to review the state of cricket in the country.
The Board received an update from the Afghan Working Group detailing the recent meeting with the representative of the Afghan Government and Afghanistan cricket Majlis in Doha.
The ICC said the government official reiterated his commitment to fully respecting and complying with the ICC constitution, in particular the need for diversity and inclusiveness and the need for the Office for the Coordination of Social Affairs to operate independently of government interference.
Working Group Chair Imran Khawaja said: “The meeting was positive and respectful and the government representative was clear in his support for the ICC constitution including in principle for women’s cricket in Afghanistan.”
“Obviously there are challenges to resume but we will continue to work with ACB to move this forward.
“The working group will closely monitor the commitment made by the Government of Afghanistan and will continue to report to the ICC’s Governing Council.” It is a requirement of the ICC that full members have a women’s national team in addition to the men’s team.
Afghanistan is a full member of the International Criminal Court. The Afghan men’s team participated in the 2021 and 2022 T20 Globalism Glass.
The working group also includes Ross McCollum (President of Ireland), Rams Raja (President of Pakistan) and Lawson Naidu (President of South Africa).
Announcing the hosts of the ICC U19 Global Events to 2027 ==================================
The world organization said on Sunday that Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Bangladesh and Nepal will host the ICC U19 events from 2024 to 2027.
Sri Lanka will host the 2024 Men’s Under-19 World Cup, while the 2026 edition will be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The 2025 U19 Women’s World Cup will be held in Malaysia and Thailand, and Bangladesh and Nepal will host the U19 Women’s 2027 event.
“The hosts were selected through a competitive bidding process overseen by a subcommittee of the Board of Directors chaired by Martin Sneden,” the ICC said in a press release.
“The ICC Board of Directors approved the recommendations of the committee which conducted a comprehensive review of each bid along with ICC management.” The 10-team 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup qualification track has also been approved.
Eight teams will qualify for the event automatically consisting of the top three teams from each group of the 2023 T20 World Cup, hosts Bangladesh (if not in the top three of Group 1) and the next highest-ranked teams in the ICC T20I Rankings on February 27, 2023.
The remaining two teams will be determined by the 10-team Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers.
The 14-team qualification path for the 2027 Men’s World Cup was also determined with ten teams obtaining automatic qualification.
The ten will feature South Africa and Zimbabwe as full host members and the next top eight teams in the ODI rankings at a date to be confirmed.
The remaining four teams will qualify through the ICC CWC Global Qualification.
