Ireland’s women’s side on Wednesday snatched a historic first T20I series victory over Pakistan, with a brilliant half-century from Gabby Lewis hitting a seven-wicket haul in the final match of the series at the Gaddafi Stadium.
While Gabby top-scored with a 46-ball 71, with 11 fours and a six at a batting average of 154.34, her opening partner Amy Hunter contributed 40 runs in 110 runs, coming back three runs short of the All-Ireland record. For the T20I partnership.

After making 167/4 in 20 overs, Ireland were bowled out by Pakistan for just 133 in 18.5 overs. With the ball, Arlene Kelly and Laura Delaney picked three wickets each while Jane Maguire had two forouts and Emyr Richardson had one wicket.
After winning the toss and choosing to putter, Amy and Gabe immediately vindicate Laura’s decision, with four boundaries out of the first three overs. Gabe was the main aggressor, and he attacked Nida Dar with the rope in the first six of the match.
She followed that up with four from the last ball that spun over her before smashing two more edges off the fourth ball. Amy took a back seat early in her innings to allow Louis to take pole position. After they smashed 56 from the powerplay, Gaby reached her 50th in reverse fashion, sweeping a full ball off Fatima Sana’a through third man for four, and taking her ninth T20I half-century off 26 balls.
With Ireland’s hundred rising in twelfth place, a large total was on the cards. Amy played good support innings before being bowled by Nasher Sandhu to hit a 35-ball 40. Orla Prendergast immediately attacked, hitting six from her second ball over long.
Gabi was well positioned, and continued to reach the boundary, advancing beyond the 70 before being caught in the middle of the field by Alia Riad, unable to get enough height on the ball from Sana to clear the player.
Despite the loss of Gabe and then Emmer, Urla continued to push Ireland towards 170. She smashed ten out of the final to put Pakistan on 168 to win and send Ireland to break full of confidence. Pakistan would have to make their highest T20I chase to prevent Ireland from a historic win.

In defence, Ireland conceded just eight runs from their first two innings before Jane made the breakthrough, dismissing Sidra Amin in the third over. Pakistan seemed to be looking deep into the chase, and the rest of the force piled on to take their total to 41. A big breakthrough came for Ireland in the seventh as Arlene delivered a clever slower ball to outsmart Munibeh Ali.
With some nerves flying around Ireland, the last two overs before the drinks break went for 25 as Pakistan continued to keep themselves in the run chase. Javeria Khan was key, hitting her fifty off 36 balls before Jane took it. Javeria got an inside edge on a ball she was looking to cut down, but the stumps were upset. The wicket brought the dangerous Nida to the crease, as Pakistan’s chase rested largely on their wicket.
Nida’s four and Kara Murray’s four and six showed that the match was still very much in balance as Pakistan needed another 80 runs from the last eight, a possible target with captain Basma Maroof and Darn at the crease. But Richardson’s run-out to dismiss Baysma opened the floodgates for Ireland, and a steady flow of wickets followed.
Two wickets in each of the last two matches from Arlene and Laura secured a comfortable 34 run victory for Ireland and gave Ed Joyce’s side a historic series win. The first time Irish women had won a competition against Pakistan, their first overseas series win against a Test playing nation and the first for any Irish team in Pakistan.
