ATK Mohun Bagan grabbed a late winner to defeat NorthEast United FC 2-1 at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Thursday. The Highlanders remained winless and without a point after the first six matches as the Mariners climbed to second place in the Indian Premier League (ISL) points table.

Liston Colaco opened the scoring in the 35th minute before Aaron Evans equalized in the 81st minute. Subhasish Bose, in his 99th ISL appearance, scored the winning goal to give ATKMB a win in their 50th ISL match.

North East United manager Marco Balpole looked disappointed in the post-match press conference after losing his first points of the season.

“We deserved a point because we created good chances and scored a good goal. But in the last minute, we conceded a goal from a free kick, and unfortunately we lost our focus and lost a point.”

He felt that the goals scored by ATK Mohun Bagan could have been avoided because the players were doing things right according to his plans.

“There was nothing in the first half, but the late goal was a gift. We worked hard on the field, and it was an individual mistake. We lost the ball in the decisive area. We shouldn’t give gifts to big teams like that and we should have done better with the ball” .

“We have to be more confident when we have the ball. We know the key to ATK Mohun Bagan is their counter-attack, and for me, both of the goals they scored were gifts.”

The position of ATK Mohun Bagan, Juan Ferrando, was not much different from his opposite position.

“From my point of view, North East United should move up the table with four and five points. At the moment they don’t have any points,” Ferrando said.

“The match was tough. They have a good team and a plan. And in some moments they were unlucky. Today, after losing 0-1, NEUFC had a great chance to equalize (through Parthib Gogoi) and in the end, conceded a goal.”

Ferrando gets particular praise for Liston Colaco, who has finally managed to hit the ball into the back of the net this season.

“It’s difficult for players to perform at a high level all season. All players go through a slump in form and that’s normal. I’m happy with Liston because he works every day in training, his mentality is strong and that’s the most important thing. Everyone knows what level Liston can perform. Ferrando said” He’s very close to what’s normal for him.”

Asked about birthday boy Dimitri Petratos’ performance and assists despite missing some chances earlier in the game, Ferrando said: “In the end, scoring goals and winning matches is the most important thing in football. For me, it’s not important that a striker is inside penalty area and score goals.

“I am very happy because we have 12 goals. These goals are spread across the team. Dimitri is not a typical number nine. He knows his role.”
