Mirabai Chanu leads the Indian Expedition, wounding Jeremy to miss

Jeremy Lalrinonga will miss the 2022 Weightlifting Championships Globalism Tournaments India A four-member squad led by Olympic silver medalist Mirabae Chano will take part in the big event next month.

Jeremy, India’s Youth Olympic champion, sustained an injury during his gold medal-winning performance at the Commonwealth Games in July.

20-year-old Rafe Mizzo is yet to recover from a groin and hamstring injury. He also missed the Asian Championships in October.

“Jeremy is still recovering from the injury he picked up during the Commonwealth Games, so he won’t be playing in these World Championships,” India coach Vijay Sharma told PTI.

“Many of our CWG lifters suffer from nursing injuries, so we picked the right four lifters,” Sharma added.

Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sanket Sagar, who also sustained an elbow injury during the Birmingham Games and later underwent surgery, will also miss the global event, starting in Pagota, Colombia from December 5-16.

Former world champion Chanu will return to action for the first time since the Commonwealth Games, winning her third medal and second gold in August.

Others in the four-member group included Commonwealth Games 73kg champion Akinta Chioli, silver medalist Bindyarani Devi and bronze medalist Gurdeep Singh.

The four lifters are currently in St. Louis, USA along with Sharma for the strength and conditioning camp.

They work with Dr. Aaron Horshig, a former weightlifter turned physical therapist and strength and conditioning coach.

Chano has been consulting with Horschig since 2020. He was instrumental in resolving her imbalance that affected her snatching technique. She has had many stints training with Horschig.

The Indian contingent will leave for Bogota on Dec. 1.

The World Championships is the first qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

However, it is an additional event rather than a mandatory one.

Under the 2024 Olympic qualification rule, the lifter is required to compulsorily compete in the 2023 World Championships and 2024 World Cup.

Apart from the above, the lifter is also required to participate in three of the following events – the 2022 World Championship, the 2023 Continental Championship, the 2023 Grand Prix 1, the 2023 Grand Prix II and the 2024 Continental Championship.
