The results of the away matches for New Zealand did not go India’s way, but the men in blue returned with plenty of positives. The series was severely marred by bad weather, but the visitors managed to get the best out of some of the youngsters. An all-rounder, Washington Sundar was one of those players who made a great impression with his game, mostly with the bat in hand. And since then, the year is 2023 Globalism The trophy is just around the corner and the Tamil Nadu cricketer is seen as one of the top contenders for the Final 15.
India batted for two full runs in the ODI series and whenever first-class batting faltered, Sundar was there to the rescue. In Auckland, his cameo of 16 balls and 37 wicket helped him India After 306 is on the board. In the final encounter, he made his first ODI 50, top-scoring with a 64-ball 51 not out in India’s total of 219.
Sundar may not have taken any wickets but he was the most economical of all. With him still a part of the Bangladesh ODIs squad as well, former India selector Saba Karim feels he can be an asset to India in the lower order.
“I will stick to number seven for Washi (Washington) Sundar because I see him as a multi-talented bowler, he can be a great asset to the Indian side. This really prolongs the batting and helps the team get ahead in the middle knowing that Washington Sundar comes in seventh or eighth, depending on the team’s composition.
All-rounder and left arm contestant Shahbaz Ahmed is also part of the touring party after coming on as a replacement for the injured Ravindra Jadeja. Karim saw that he could be a good fit for the Indian team with his all-around abilities.
“I look at him as a viable alternative as an all-rounder batsman. On the one hand, you have Hardik Pandya, who is a versatile batsman and can run the seam. Then I look at Shahbaz Ahmed as a versatile batsman who can swing his left arm.
“Depending on the group, you can fit him easily because the kind of performances he has given for India A and Bengal over the last two or three seasons have been phenomenal. I am sure he will get more opportunities at international level and he will put in some great performances.”
