Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Meta, today revealed that the much-anticipated WhatsApp “Communities” feature is now available. The feature is scheduled to be rolled out today. Mark said that over the coming months, the feature will gradually become available to all users.
The update effectively adds Slack and Discord-type functionality, making it ideal for large groups, businesses, and communities such as school parents. The Communities feature will use end-to-end encryption to handle features such as in-chat polls, video calls for 32 people, groups of up to 1024 participants, and communication links. Its goal is to provide structural support for all communications within a single application.
“Today we’re launching communities on WhatsApp. It makes groups even better by enabling subgroups, multiple chat threads, ad channels, and more. We’re also in the process of rolling out polls and making video calls for 32 people as well,” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, at the launch. Communities, everything is secured with end-to-end encryption so your messages stay private.
Communities on WhatsApp will enable people to combine separate groups under one umbrella with a structure that works for them. This way people can receive updates sent to the entire community and easily organize smaller discussion groups about what interests them,” the company said.
Communities will also come with powerful new management features, such as the ability to manage groups that can be added and send announcement messages to everyone.
In addition, community admins will have the authority to delete a member’s account from the community and disassociate groups from it, regardless of the ability to delete inappropriate chats and content.

Users will also be able to have a greater set of controls – decide who can add them to a group, leave communities and leave the group silently.
Meta has gone to great lengths to ensure that the communities offer a “level of privacy and security not found anywhere else” for the communication that occurs between different organizations and workplaces.
This development comes right after WhatsApp launched the ‘Call Links’ feature that enables users to create an audio or video call link and share it with their intended contacts, and once they click on the link, they will be included in an ongoing call.
