Costa addressed the post-match press conference after coach Paulo Bento received a red card for protesting in the last minute of the match when the referee blew the whistle as South Korea were about to take a corner kick.
“In the first 25 minutes, we managed to control the game with possession of the ball which was very good. We gave good passes and worked out our strategy for the game. After the first goal, things changed until the end of the first half.
“In that moment, we lost control. The second half was completely different – we had control, had possession and created chances to score.
“The result is totally unfair. Even a draw wouldn’t be fair. It’s clear we deserved to win… Count on us for the next game.”
The South Korean players looked frustrated after the match as they fell to the ground, while tears were crying the captain and key player, Son Heung-min.
Asked about their reaction, Costa said: “The reaction came from a group that felt unfair in the end. It’s normal for someone (to act this way when) they did everything they could to win but weren’t able to do it.”
“I think we should be sad and unfair but we should also be very proud because we gave everything we had on the field.”
Bento’s red card means the Portuguese will not be on the touchline when South Korea take on his native Cristiano Ronaldo.
The assistant coach added, “He will not be present on match day and that will be a loss for us because he is a great coach…but this will make us better, unite and gather all our energies.” .
