Despite the defeat, Poland also managed to reach the round of 16, as they edged out Mexico for second place in Group C.

Messi and Lewandowski then exchanged a few words and embraced each other on the pitch after the match.

Lewandowski won the 2021 FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award in January last year after Messi bested him to win a record seventh Ballon d’Or.

This apparently sparked a cold war between the two incantation strikers with the Polish top scorer being the favorite to win that year’s Ballon d’Or.

Because of this controversial rivalry, fans were left wondering what the two superstars talked about at the end of their match.

Now, Lewandowski has revealed what he said to the PSG striker after the match.

while talking to BuildThe 34-year-old said, “We chatted a bit and had fun. I told Messi I played more defensively than usual – but something like that is sometimes necessary for a team.”

Lewandowski also spoke about his unusual defensive role against Argentina and added: “It’s very rare, yes: I’m in defensive midfield. But I knew I had to help the team.”

Poland will next play France in the round of 16 match on December 4.

Lewandowski could not muster a shot and barely saw the ball against Argentina and will have to be on top for their game against the reigning champions on Sunday.
